About Powys

Wales’ largest county, rural Powys is a landscape of verdant hills, little villages and pretty market towns brimming with excellent food and heaps of historic landmarks. Popular with walkers and cyclists, the region is also brilliant for laid-back country escapes as a couple or family, with a wide range of accommodation options suitable for a whole host of budgets. Many of the best places to stay in Powys are classic country house hotels, complete with striking views and excellent facilities, but some of our favourite spots are little restaurants-with-rooms, where you can tuck in to fresh, seasonal fare before hiding away in intimate tranquility.

Named for an ancient Welsh kingdom, Powys includes heritage buildings aplenty, some of which are now beautiful hotels with fascinating histories. Head to pink-hued Powis Castle for a sense of the region’s past, or stroll the streets of pretty Hay-on-Wye — the famed literary hotspot — Builth Wells and Crickhowell for lovely buildings, bustling markets and lively cafés. The MOMA Machynlleth is a particular standout if you travel to Machynlleth, showcasing modern Welsh Art, whilst the town also hosts a fantastic music festival each August — perfect for culture lovers.

If it’s the great outdoors that you’re after, head to the picturesque Wye Valley or to the Brecon Beacons National Park for hiking, rambling, cycling, fishing and horse riding. Thrill-seekers can try river rafting, abseiling and rock climbing, too.

Round off big days of discovery with family games of croquet on the lawn of your manor house hotel, or feast on gourmet dishes at a pint-sized eatery with just a few rooms upstairs. Whether you’re on the hunt for a gorgeous wedding venue, an indulgent weekend getaway or a fun family base, the best places to stay in Powys promise rural charm in spades. Do book your stay well in advance if travelling during the summer months, as our picks can fill up fast!
