And they really do have a château to recommend to anyone who fancies playing Marquis or Vicomte: their recommendations include the best château hotels in Burgundy for families, for a special occasion, and for just passing through.
For the Full Château Experience
- If you’re looking for the experience of staying in a castle, the luxurious Château de Bagnols is likely to please. Medieval in style, with rounded towers and impressive pale stonework, the château is surrounded by gardens and vineyards. Inside the features are just as impressive and historic: there are grand stone fireplaces, vast tapestries, murals, vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, ancient tiled floors, and a cherished collection of antiques. There’s an incredible spa in the stone hewn cellars, a Michelin-starred restaurant and lots of activities to keep you busy.
For a Special Occasion
- The 13th century Château de Vault de Lugny overlooks its charming grounds from one side of its moat. On the château side are a collection of 16 charming rooms and suites, all generously proportioned and carefully decorated to suit the original building with its exposed beams, tall windows and grand fireplaces. The Burgundian restaurant is infused with contemporary ideas, and meals are served in the vast kitchen or on the beautiful terrace. You can fish, ride horses or bikes, play tennis, taste wine or take to the skies in a hot air balloon.
- The Château de Pizay estate is large, incorporating formal gardens, a pool and spa with a sauna, hammam and hydrotherapy pool, and acres of grape vines destined to fill Beaujolais bottles. The hotel part of the estate has 62 rooms, suites and villas, plus sophisticated communal areas. The restaurant is Michelin recommended, and they have a wedding license.
For Families
- Surrounded by rpws of grapevines, the Château de Besseuil is a grand, 16th century residence turned hotel. It has 20 rooms, suites and apartments, all different shapes and sizes, with some particularly good family sized options, with everything up to three bedrooms. When the château was reimagined and the contemporary bathrooms went in, the owners also added a lovely heated pool at the bottom of the expansive gardens. The restaurant is gourmet but friendly, and there’s a cool bar.
For a Countryside Escape
- The Château de Chailly is a grand, 16th century affair on a large scale, even for a castle. The exterior, with its round towers and spiked turrets and ornate details picked out in pale stone, looks every bit the château many of us dream of, and now that it’s become a 45 room hotel, it also has many luxurious features. The rooms and suites are large, and highlight many of the building’s elegant, original features, but they’re still very comfortable. There are several bars and lounges, and two restaurants — one fine dining, and one bistro style — plus there’s a pool, a golf course, tennis courts and bike rental available.
- Perfectly positioned on its own extensive parklands between Dijon and Beaune, the Château de Saulon is an elegant country escape. This château is of the beautiful, rectangular variety, with pillared balconies and tall windows. Inside are 32 rooms and suites in a range of sizes and styles, but all light and spacious feeling, with contemporary bathrooms. The gourmet, regional restaurant is worthy of a stand alone visit, but if you are staying you can work off your meals in the pool, on the tennis courts or the grounds.
- Like a dollhouse on the outside, and a contemporary design hotel on the inside, the Château de La Resle feels like a sophisticated pick. There are just five rooms and suites, all different and all elegant, and a collection of equally sophisticated living areas. Positioned just far enough off the main routes through Burgundy to feel peaceful, but still perfect for sightseeing, the château has idyllic views. For supper they have an excellent table d’hote offering.
For Foodies
- The Château de Courban et Spa has all the features of a luxury hotel, and is surrounded by beautiful parklands. There’s an excellent spa with an impressive menu, a gourmet restaurant with a Michelin star, a pool, terraces and grounds, and a library. The 25 rooms and suites are all uniquely decorated, with style ranging from traditional toile du jouy fabrics to a sort of industrial chic meets original château features.
For Vineyard Views
- The Château de Pierreclos is the striking hub of a working vineyard, set elegantly amongst manicured grounds. From the outside this château has a slightly austere look about it, but its five guest rooms are anything but; beautiful styled to make the most of the château's wonderful original ceilings, floors and fireplaces — and the bathrooms are seriously luxurious. There’s no restaurant, but they offer an excellent breakfast, and have an incredible wine cellar.
- The Hotel La Cueillette is the only property on this list missing the ‘c’ word from its name, but we feel this meticulously converted 19th century property set amongst the vineyards of Meursault qualifies. The dining room has become a fine dining restaurant, and is exquisitely conserved, complete with Versailles style chandeliers, mirrors, parquet flooring and murals. The 19 rooms and suites are far more contemporary, styled simply, with blonde wood floors, white linens, large windows and contemporary art. There’s a spa — where the grapes from the region are used in therapies — an indoor pool, and an exceptional cellar.
For a Rural Retreat
- The Château de Villette is a wonderfully French feeling country hotel escape with just five rooms and suites. Each room is romantically furnished, borrowing from the traditional style of this region and the château’s original features, and all have huge windows with revitalising views over the vast parklands of the 500 hectare estate, beyond which is the Morvan Natural Park.
- The Château Sainte Sabine is a proper palace of a château, complete with spires, ornate circular windows and ramparts. It’s set on an eight hectare park on the banks of the Burgundy Canal between Beaune and Dijon. Inside are 22 rooms and suites, which have a fresher, more contemporary feel than the château’s exterior, and a chic restaurant known for its local cuisine.
- The 15 room hotel, Château de Fleurville, is a beautifully renovated medieval fortress set in mature parklands. The decor varies from room to room, and features plenty of draped fabrics, wrought iron, and cut crystal. The restaurant is known for its local specialities, and there’s an excellent spa, a heated pool and a hot tub.
For Great Value
- The Château d'Ige is a fortified château in a pretty hamlet just outside Cluny — you’ll know it because of its turreted towers. Inside, connected by historic spiral staircases, there are 16 guest rooms, all unique in size and decor, with styles ranging from toile du jouy to King Louis and more contemporary style. Surrounded by lush gardens, with a pool and terrace, which the restaurant spills out onto when the weather allows for it. The wine list is unsurprisingly excellent.
