It’s hard to believe this field-and-woodland-wrapped hotel is only 10 minutes from the bucket-and-spade beaches of Scarborough. Set in 17 acres of grounds and pretty English gardens – gazebos, hidden corners, rose-entwined pergolas – it feels deep in the country. And, indeed, is inside the North York Moors National Park. The handsome, Victorian farmhouse, with its creeper-covered honeyed stone and pantile roof, has been carefully extended with two courtyards of bedrooms built around charming paved gardens and water features. As a result, many of the bedrooms are ground-floor, but all follow the same modest country-house style of solid wooden furniture, leather armchairs, and soft furnishings in pale silky shades. They’re comfortable and extremely peaceful, if a little bland. As well as the peace, many regulars return for the food, which is more skilful and modern than the surrounds might suggest. Virtually everything – including the delicious breads - made from scratch. After a day walking on the moors, or exploring the coast, return to afternoon tea and a quiet spot in the garden or one of the cottagey sitting-rooms.
