Cartagena is a city out of a different era. Grown wealthy as a port on the silver and gold trading route, Cartagena was beautifully built, along cobbled streets, and within impressive fortifications, which are now part of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Listed charm. What the Heritage Listing hasn’t prevented is the building of swimming pools — there are a surprising number of luxurious hotel pools within the historic centre of town. Heritage Listing protects the colonial townhouses of the old middle class district of San Diego too (some of these have been converted into elegant boutique hotels), but many of these have been allowed pools in their courtyards and gardens. However it is worth noting that when a hotel claims to have a pool, it may well be a very small one either on a roof terrace overlooking the city or in a leafy courtyard (though you can find a handful of hotels with a large pool).
