Set on the banks of the Vidourle River, Sommières began life as part of the Roman route connecting Nîmes to Toulouse. The imposing, Roman-built arched bridge has become one of the town’s defining landmarks as it has grown into a thriving riverside community. Brilliant for wine lovers as well as history buffs, Sommières is surrounded by vineyards and the craggy landscapes of the eastern Gard region. There’s a small selection of great accommodation options in the area, with our Gurus’ favourite being a converted winery. Welcoming, affordable and characterful, it’s undoubtedly one of the best places to stay in Sommières.
Aside from the Roman bridge, Sommières has an impressive 11th-century fortified castle with a particularly lovely chapel. Guided tours of the château and the medieval heart of the town itself come highly recommended. The Saturday market is another highlight. Keen adventurers, on the other hand, can hike, horse ride and mountain bike through the surrounding countryside. Enjoy zip lining and other thrilling aerial activities at the Roc de Massereau, go kayaking, fishing and sailing on the Vidourle, or kick back with a waterside picnic.
Tours and tastings at local vineyards — including les Vignerons du Sommierois and Domaine Costes-Cirgues — are excellent. When one of the best places to stay in Sommières was once a vineyard, you know you’ll be surrounded by wine; perfect for enjoying the fruits of the region.
