The least touristic and wildest of the Sporades Islands, Alonnisos is a beautiful destination. Protected by the stunning 2260-sq-km National Marine Park of Alonnisos, this is a marvellous land of rocky coastline, pebbled beaches and sparkling ocean waters, brilliant for snorkelling and diving. Intimate and welcoming, the best places to stay in Alonnisos reflect the island’s easygoing spirit and its appealing sense of seclusion.
Get to grips with the island’s history at the Alonnisos Museum in Patitiri, which houses a fascinating collection of artefacts including pirates’ weapons and hand-drawn maps. Other heritage highlights include the Church of the Birth of Christ, which has 12th-century elements within its 17th-century exterior, and the pretty village of Kalamakia. You’ll find hiking trails aplenty in the island’s interior, connecting the three villages and various viewpoints, too.
Beachgoers will adore Megalos Mourtias, Cape Kokkinokastro and Agios Dimitrios beaches, which invite relaxed sunbathing as well as swimming, sailing and other water sports. Snorkelling and diving come highly recommended, as do boat tours with marine guides, who can point out different creatures as you cruise the crystal clear waters. MOM, an info centre dedicated to Mediterranean monk seals, is excellent. Retreat to one of the best places to stay in Alonnisos for cracking Greek cuisine and superb sunsets from your private balcony at the end of each day.
