About Arezzo
Arezzo is well positioned between Florence, Siena, Montepulciano, Perugia, Assisi… so it makes the perfect base for touring both Tuscany and Umbria. There’s a good range of accommodation to be found here, from townhouses and palazzos in the city’s historic centre, to a converted abbey, and huge Tuscan estates on the outskirts. Where you book will depend on whether you like to stay in the heart of the action, or whether you prefer things a little more low-key and rustic!
Arezzo doesn’t sit at the top of a hill, it runs along the side of a hill, so it still has that Tuscan stepped look, but without as many development restrictions as some of its neighbours. This means that while the historic centre offers rich pickings of Renaissance palazzos and Romanesque churches, the city’s periphery offers more in the way of conveniences. Most visitors come to admire the architecture and the Piero della Francesca murals in the Bacci Chapel of the Basilica San Francesco, but it is also well known for its great shops where you can pick up anything from clothes and jewellery to antiques. Indeed it hosts one of Italy's biggest antique fairs on the first weekend of every month.
Don't forget that Tuscany is hugely busy in the peak summer months, so if you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Arezzo, you'll need to get organised and book early.
The Best Places to Stay in Arezzo
Within Histoic Arezzo
- The Graziella Patio Hotel is an historic townhouse, sympathetically converted into a 13 room hotel. The rooms and suites feel contemporary, but feature the odd original feature — terracotta tiled floors, beamed ceilings etc — so that it still feels like a grand place to stay. Some of the rooms have private hot tubs or saunas, and they offer massages and other beauty treatments, so we recommend the Graziella to couples, but it’s also a great value pick within Arezzo.
For a Villa in the Countryside
- Il Borro is a 700 hectare Tuscan estate, once owned by the Medicis, with an elegant villa turned hotel, and adjacent farm buildings turned apartment suites. The magic of Il Borro is the way modern comforts have been wound into the estate’s original, medieval features. All in there are 22 rooms and suites. Plus three restaurants: one a cafe, one gourmet and one traditionally Tuscan. You'll also find a billiards room, a pool and sauna, and incredible views.
- Badia di Pomaio is what you get when you cross a beautiful, rough hewn Tuscan stone abbey, with Scandinavian design aesthetics, and it works really well. Soft plastered walls and exposed beamed ceilings look fresh against pale wood floors, crisp white linen and minimal furnishings. Its 14 rooms and suites are all unique, but all light and spacious, and there’s a very elegant lounge, plus a bar, restaurant and terrace, so lots of communal space. The Tuscan cuisine is authentic, and the wine cellar excellent. A luxury, romantic pick.
