About Massa Lubrense

Massa Lubrense both a small town, and the largest municipal region on the sun-drenched Sorrentine Peninsula, lining the blue delight of the Tyrrhenian Sea from the Sorrento Cape down to Punta Campanella, and all the way inland to Sant’Agata sui due Golfi. Along this stretch, rocky, secluded coves picturesquely alternate with idyllic beaches. And the interior is no less inspiring, with two nature reserves, Punta Campanella, and Ieranto, looking across the water to the island of Capri, plus rural pockets producing olive oil, wine, lemonade and grapefruits, and hilltop hamlets to explore. Our pick of the best places to stay in Massa Lubrense are dotted throughout the region, with some beach-side resorts on the Bay of Naples, hilltop villa conversions, rural retreats, and a family-run restaurant with rooms right on the sea front.

Massa Lubrense is believed by many to be the region Odysseus and his sailors were lured to by the sweet siren song, and that Ieranto Bay is where he dedicated a temple to Athena. Even if you find this idea just too romantic, Massa Lubrense’s fact-checkable historic credentials are impossible not to be impressed by. Close to Pompeii and Paestum, the region has a surprising number of medieval monasteries, cathedrals and churches, as well as Greco-Roman relics. This is certainly a gorgeous region with a lot to discover.

Massa Lubrense’s centre or town is just seven kilometres along the coast from Sorrento, its pretty port with charming pastel buildings is sheltered by wooded hills. The church, with its colourful cupola is the centre of town, and around it are shops, bars and restaurants. Many of the region’s 11 famous walking routes start in the town of Massa Lubrense, then lead walkers away to lemon and olive groves, and through woods to hilltop hamlets and ancient discoveries. Some of the best places to stay in Massa Lubrense aren’t far from these trails.

The Best Places to Stay in Massa Lubrense

For The Location

  • La Conca del Sogno is a welcoming, family-run restaurant with rooms right on a low rocky point, overlooking the bright blue waters of an Amalfi Coast bay. The setting is impossible to beat, both for those arriving at the restaurant by restaurant skiff, or winding down the road. Its seven rooms and suites are pleasantly decorated, in a contemporary style, and have huge windows and private water-view terraces. Begun in the late '50s by Pietro Tizzani after his family decided to close their rock export business on the same site, it was passed on to his children in the 1990s, who keep the ethos of absolute simplicity and freshness of food, warmth of welcome and laid back ambience alive and thriving. Stay here for the atmosphere, the setting and the wonderful trattoria food. You are as likely to find famous faces as strangers amongst you, for La Conca del Sogno is seriously special!
  • Positioned within the Punta Campanella reserve, and with incredible views across to the island of Capri, the Relais Blu Belvedere must have one of the best spots on the planet if you like picturesque ocean views. The details of this contemporary villa do nothing to detract from that, with glass walls, and plenty of white letting in all the light and making the most of the blue views. The pool and roof terrace are impeccable, the 11 rooms and suites are large, and the restaurant is easy to dine in for every meal. Expect privacy, relaxation, and beauty.

For the Views

  • Villa Eliana is a six room hotel converted from a private villa, built in the 1960s. Originally a gift for the wife of a Neapolitan ship-owner, today paying guests are also able to appreciate the incredible views from this spot: from the outdoor pool and roof terrace. The '60s architecture is cool and white, but the interiors have been updated for a more contemporary feel — though they still feature splashes of 60s colour. Each of the rooms has a private balcony or patio with wonderful views.

For Families

  • The Art Hotel Villa Fiorella is a 23 room boutique hotel just outside the town of Massa Lubrense, set amongst olive trees, and overlooking the Bay of Naples. White is the colour of choice for both inside and out, and the simple decor doesn’t distract from the incredible setting. The infinity pool in the garden makes the most of the views too, as does the gourmet seafood restaurant. Some of the rooms are ideal for families.

For Romance

  • The elegant hotel Don Alfonso 1890 has been converted from a charming villa built in the named year. This is a wonderful place to stay if you love colour, and memorable hotel decor, because each of its eight rooms and suites is decorated with a strong colour theme, as well as plush antiques, original art, and fun details. The gardens are lovely, with a shaded terrace and a marvellous Mediterranean restaurant.

  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • Even during winter Massa Lubrense still gets eight hours of sunshine a day, and on the rainy days there’s still usually some sun. That’s what a Mediterranean climate will do for you. The most popular time to visit is summer, but if you’re not tied to the school holidays you can still enjoy the coastline of this region in autumn, with sea temperatures warm into late October, and the majority of businesses remaining open until November, if not longer. And of course milder weather is ideal for visiting the archaeological sites, and for walking. Spring is beautiful and idyllic too.
