Most affluent of the green and pleasant Home Counties, Surrey is often spoken of as little more than a London commuter belt. But actually 70% of Surrey is classed as green belt land, so this is prime country for outdoorsy pursuits, punctuated by picture-postcard-perfect pubs and beautiful river views. Some of the most romantic hotels in Surrey take advantage of these views and the pretty towns which surround them, but our Gurus have also uncovered some wonderful rural escapes.
As far as the green bits go the Surrey Hills are considered an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and then there's the South Downs National Park, but there’s also a bit of wine country - think Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking. You’ll find some of our picks for 6 of the most romantic hotels in Surrey offering spectacular rural views, but you’ll also find some close to the region’s highlights, like Hampton Court Palace, Epsom Racecourse, Polesden Lacy, Loseley Park and Clandon Park.
For a Country House Hotel

- Built in the 16th century, Langshott Manor is a quintessentially English manor house with beamed ceilings, four-poster beds, plus fabrics and roaring fires come winter. The restaurant is award-winning.
- Redhill’s Nutfield Priory is a beautiful country house hotel with outstanding views over the Surrey and Sussex countryside and 60 stylish, and individually designed, rooms.
For Foodies

- Great Fosters is a gorgeous 16th century royal hunting lodge turned luxury hotel just south of Egham. There's a good range of rooms and suites, both traditional and contemporary in style, but the piece de resistance is Tony Parkin at the Tudor Room, a sublime Michelin starred restaurant with only five tables and where the chef himself introduces the food.
- Right on the Thames in Richmond, The Bingham is a beautiful boutique hotel with elegant, yet contemporary, decor and sumptuous furnishings. The views are incredible and the modern British restaurant has a Michelin star.
For a romantic spa break

- Pennyhill Park Hotel and The Spa is a beautiful, creeper-clad property with an award-winning spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant. In fact all the facilities are lavish, as is the decor in many of the 120-odd rooms. There’s also 123 acres of Surrey parkland surrounding the hotel.
For great value
- Chiddingfold’s The Crown Inn is a charming, 14th century, ivy-clad inn on the edge of the village green. As well as the exposed beams, flagstone floors and huge fireplaces, The Crown Inn has seven rooms with four-poster beds and an AA rated restaurant.
- For around the same room rate you can stay at Bel and the Dragon, a charming hotel in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to Haslemere. This area inspired Jane Austen - and this is certainly a beautiful place for a stroll, or something more serious.
