“A chic B&B offering a superb location just minutes from York's historic city walls. Light and airy rooms are simply dressed with soft hues, light pine furniture and modern bathrooms. Hearty breakfasts are served. The perfect base to explore the city on foot.”

Hotel review

Turn off busy Bootham Road along leafy St Peter’s Grove to this large B&B, and the hustle and bustle of the city instantly slip away. And yet York Minster and city sights are only a 10- to 15-minute walk. The impressive, red-brick Victorian house - built for a tobacco merchant - has been carefully converted into one of the city’s best-value B&Bs. Bedrooms are light and modern in creams, taupes and pale greys, and carefully furnished in a simple, uncluttered style while bathrooms are shower-only (except for two rooms) and can be a squeeze in some. It’s worth upgrading to the bigger double rooms or opting for a room in one of the two new-build annexes at the rear for more space. The latter also make a good choice for groups of friends or family gatherings.

Breakfast in the airy and light dining-room offers a freshly cooked choice including omelettes, eggs Benedict and a full cooked Yorkshire grill with vegan and vegetarian options. Staff are friendly and helpful with excellent local knowledge including good suggestions for evening meals. Throw in free car parking, help-yourself hot drinks, and happy hour at the bar and this makes a good choice for people who want a homely base for city sight-seeing.
