“A low-key luxury hotel on Newcastle’s vibrant Quayside. Inside, expect dark tones, velvet textures and slick, low-lit interiors that feel effortlessly cool. There’s a smart grill restaurant, buzzing cocktail bar and some of the city’s biggest, sleekest rooms. Polished but not showy”

Hotel review

The location is stunning; right on Newcastle’s Quayside, just downriver of the Millenium
Bridge and opposite the BALTIC contemporary art gallery. A former 1990s red-brick office
block, interiors have been imaginatively transformed into a slinky, sultry, lounge-y affair with
a grey-on-grey colour palette which occasionally dips into near-black (finding a dropped
earring is tricky…). The large, L-shaped bar has semi-partitioned alcoves of sofas and tub
armchairs, black-and-white photographs of models from a bygone age of glamour, and lots
of low-level lighting and fat candles in bell-jars. A semi-separate Champagne room can be
privately booked.

The restaurant continues the same style and the same classic theme with a grill menu of
steaks and seafood; perhaps wagyu rib eye, New York strip Black Angus or stone bass with
bean cassoulet, ideally preceded by a cocktail. There is a vegan and vegetarian menu, but
this is primarily a carnivore’s fiefdom. Breakfast, on the other hand, is even-handed with a
short but well-balanced menu including eggs Benedict and avocado with poached egg as
well as the full English.

Bedrooms, which continue the grey-on-grey theme, exude a low-key luxury; nothing fussy
but everything in the right place, from a cleverly inset ‘hot-plate’ for hair tongs to TVs that
transform into mirrors. Fully-tiled bathrooms have large walk-in showers, around a third with
separate bath. Around half the rooms have full or partial river-views; definitely worth asking for
