Hotel review

East Winds Inn is a bit of a St Lucia institution (amongst the Brits anyway!). Managed by GM Gareth Leach for the last 23 years, it is an example of how to create a fabulously laid back property, where all the guests and staff alike, feel like old friends. Set amid stunning 14 acre gardens (featuring over 100 tropical species) which have been studiously put together by Christine Lovell an expert in landscaping in St lucia. She has personally created a garden walk (with numbered plants) and an accompanying guide book. For really keen green fingered types, the head gardener, Sylvanus, will take you on a personal guided tour. The thirty rooms are dotted around the grounds in attractive cottages - the newer ones are Caribbean in style, whilst the original ones closer to the beach are modelled on African rondavels, with thatched roofs. The decor is understated elegance, with statement butterfly pattern cushions and original Caribbean prints adorning the walls. Bedrooms are large and airy, without a TV in sight - heaven! All rooms also have a charming sit out terrace area. The Bamboo lounge is the open air hub of the resort - it's a stunning octagonal room with a very "clubby" feel - the perfect spot for your pre dinner cocktail or glass of champagne. Food is delicious - a daily changing table d'hote style menu is served every evening with fillet steaks and lobster (when in season) at no extra cost. East Winds is also keen to ensure the wellbeing of its guests and has developed a range of activites with this in mind from yoga and pilates classes, to a fitness track (with separate activity stations - a bit like an outdoor gym, but more fun!) to sailing lessons (all complimentary). There's even a healthy option served at every meal! This is "all inclusive" but not as you know it....there is not an add-on in sight.

With the rooms scattered in cottages over the tropical gardens, and the open-air lounge and swimming pool surrounded by thick foliage..
