“A monastic Medieval detox in Umbria, with single 'celluzze' rooms only. Stripped back to essential comforts, such as hand embroidered sheets. Situated in 7000 untouched acres, the house took four years to build from scratch. Vegetarian menu, simple yet chic eco spa, Gregorian chants — near perfect.”

Hotel review

A beautiful 14th century monastery turned eco hotel which offers solo travellers and spirit seekers a new concept in mental detox in a secluded valley in the depths of the Umbrian countryside. Accommodation is in single ‘celluzze' rooms (some doubles are available), each stripped back to the bare essentials. Expect to find hand embroidered hemp sheets, an iron bedstead, a rock-hewn desk, a simple bathroom and a soundtrack of Gregorian chanting.

Each morning an agenda is posted for the day’s activities, from communal walks to yoga and meditation. Vegetarian food is served in a candlelit dining room, on silent communal tables, with recipes inspired by traditional monastic life.

There’s also a spa, with a thermal plunge pool and a stone steam room, a restful garden, and a fireside communal area, where guests are encouraged to read.

Situated in 7000 untouched acres, the house took four years to build from scratch. Naturally there is no wifi or TV.
