Almost as famous worldwide as whisky itself, Gleneagles Hotel is quite simply the Grand Dame of Scottish accommodation. Originally built in 1924 and owned by the Caledonian Railway Company (it boasts its own station), it is now part of Diageo. As you would expect this resort hotel oozes luxury throughout - kilted gentlemen greet you at the entrance and impeccable service is standard. There are more activities on offer than you could possibly contemplate achieving in one short stay: world famous golf courses, superb ESPA, equestrian school, falconry centre, clay pigeon shooting, tennis, shooting, fishing and much more. There are plenty of dining options too; not to be missed is Andrew Fairlie's award winning restaurant - the only establishment with two Michelin stars in Scotland, The Strathearn Restaurant boasting two AA Rosettes and if you prefer things a bit more relaxed Deseos or the Dormy House.

Why do people love staying in your hotel? They love luxury, but more than that, they love the warm friendly staff, the genuine welcome and desire to please and un-stuffy atmosphere. They tell us that Gleneagles is a place where memories are made, it’s a magical side-step out of real life and a place people return to again and again for landmark celebrations. Every member of the family has a different favourite place or activity at Gleneagles and we see the same families returning year after year, until the children are bringing their own children.
What is there to do in the area? If you can manage to work your way through all the activities on offer on site – from spa to golf, to shooting, falconry, horse-riding, gun-dog training, falconry, fishing, swimming, cycling, tennis, pitch n putt, and still have energy left, then Gleneagles is only an hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh and so makes a perfect base for exploring Scotland. Perthshire itself is a beautiful county with tranquil glens, ancient forests and amazingly well preserved castles and country homes. Adventure tourism is booming with water sports, mountain activities, bungee jumping, canyoning, flying and much more on offer locally. Edinburgh, much of which is a UNESCO world heritage site, and home to the Edinburgh Festival, is a must visit whenever you stay, and cosmopolitan Glasgow, host venue to the 2014 Commonwealth Games, is equally close. Stirling Castle is also a short drive away to the south and is one of the oldest and most historically important castles in Scotland.
What kind of breakfast do you offer? The Gleneagles breakfast is legendary! We offer a huge range of buffet food, and also a cook-to-order menu, available in the Long Dining Room in the Strathearn Restaurant and also by room service.
Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? We have four restaurants in-house: 1) The Strathearn is one of the last great formal dining rooms, with a theatre of food on offer, where salmon is carved and steak flambéed at your table. The focus is on using the best local produce to create a menu inspired by the flavours of France and Scotland. 2) Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles offers an exclusive dining experience. The restaurant holds not one, but two of the highly coveted Michelin Stars, earned through Andrew’s exciting and inspiring culinary style – combining the best of produce and skill to create the ultimate dining experience. 3) Less formal dining is available in DESEO. Serving a range of flavours from Spain, Italy and Greece as well as some family favourites, the menu caters for all tastes and moods. It also boasts a range of steaks and cuts of meat, all expertly chosen. You can select your cut from our ‘Meats of Gleneagles’ book, or have one of our chefs recommend one. 4) The Dormy Clubhouse Bar and Grill offers a more relaxing atmosphere with less formal sittings; its distinctive bar and grill style allows for a variety of options. Located overlooking the 18th Greens of both The Kings and The Queens courses, it serves an all-day menu inspired by great modern bar food. Afternoon tea is also served daily in The Bar.
Which are your most popular room types, and why? Our Estate Rooms which have rooms over the grounds and gardens are probably the most popular, for special occasions and families our Whisky Suites are firm favourites.
What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers? For the discerning traveller Gleneagles offers a wealth of opportunities for exploration, both within the resort itself and in the wider area.
An iconic resort hotel lightly dusted with jazz-age glamour, dripping in luxury with an added measure of fun. With quietly classy bedrooms, masses of country pursuits, championship golf courses, a fabulous spa and two-starred Michelin food..
