It's easy to imagine frock-coated diplomats sipping sherry in the cool, marble-floored salons of this grand 19th century mansion. There have been plenty of additions since 1990, when the former British Embassy to the short-lived Cretan Republic was turned into the Halepa Hotel. It was renovated in 2014, and facilities now include high-speed internet access and a rooftop terrace-bar with hot tub. Young palms strive to rise above cast iron cafe tables, a splashing fountain, and patches of neatly trimmed lawn in front of the imposing neo-classical facade. Twin marble staircases lead to five 'superior rooms' and a VIP suite on the first floor of the original building. On the ground floor, the hushed lobby is almost intimidatingly grand, with more than a whiff of belle-époque. Service is courteous and professional, and (unusually for a Greek holiday hotel) the front desk is staffed around the clock. In rooms, the colour scheme is old school, with cream coloured walls and a lot of claret and gilt accents, and wall-mounted TVs are a slightly jarring note. Superior rooms in the old wing are more spacious than standard rooms in the new wing (added in 1990). There are three 'family rooms' but overall Halepa is more suitable for child-free couples.
