Stylish, modern and unexpected, RAAS Jodhpur is a welcome oasis after a long, dusty and bumpy journey from Jaipur. It's a four hour journey on a good day, but if the government have elections coming up expect it to be longer as they ramp up the road renovations and diversions are put in place!
The location couldn't be better; it's just a 5 minute walk from the clock tower and the various markets and bazaars — if you don't fancy walking then the hotel can organise a tuk tuk and a guide if it's your first time (recommended if you want to explore local life).
The hotel is spread across four original buildings plus three modern structures which have been inspired by the Walled City. Modern and ancient styles blend seamlessly. In the modern building Jaali (intricate architectural sandstone carvings) create shade and structure and form shutters on the private balconies. Jodhpur’s red sandstone unites the old and the new with modern designs adding a new dimension to the area’s ancient carving industry.
At the centre of the hotel is the pool and two restaurants which lead to the spa in one of the 18th-century buildings. The 39 rooms and suites are all large, with bath, shower and organic bath and body products (not to be taken!). Those in the modern building are shaded from the sun by the jaali shutters that fold back to reveal the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort. RAAS do have their own filtered water in the rooms, but I would recommend asking for bottled water.
Darikhana is the rooftop al fresco restaurant from which you can peer over the walls into the city below and illuminated fort beyond. Every dish at the Darikhana is prepared with hand ground spices, specially sourced from a 200-year-old shop hidden in the lairs of Old Delhi. Baradari is in the haveli courtyard by the pool and offers a range of local and international dishes made from seasonal organic vegetables from the hotel's garden. Breakfast is a combination of buffet and à la carte.
Enjoy an afternoon by the pool after a day's exploring and soak up the magic of this oasis in the heart of the blue city.
