Famous for its powder white beaches and emerald green rice fields, Comporta has long drawn the cognoscenti to its off-grid charms and slow way of life. Whilst for a long time renting villas, often owned by celebrities who could go barefoot on the beaches unnoticed, were the only way to stay here, the opening of a hotel, Sublime, was a game changer. The fourteen rooms, swimming pool, set amongst the pines and fire-pit for a night-time cocktail soon developed to become the resort it has now with villa cabanas, ranging from 1 to 5 bedrooms, a bio pool, large spa and two restaurants, one of which is outdoor in the heart of the organic garden. Here at a communal table for 12 only, gastronomic dishes are conjured up using ingredients from the surrounding garden. The main restaurant, Sem Porta, which is housed in wooden barn, inspired by the old rice storing facilities of the area, serves regional fare, matched with local wines.
Bedrooms are breezy, with local touches such as cupboard doors lined with reeds, a nod to the Comporta style of thatch and reed architecture, and lamps in straw. Bathrooms are luxurious with egg-shaped tubs and his and hers basins.
Children are well catered for with their own small pool and a good play area.
