“The epitome of a traditional inn - downstairs is a cosy pub with a roaring fire, beamed ceilings, horse brasses adorning the walls and local ales being pulled at the bar. Food is unpretentious and hearty while rooms are simple and cosy.”

Hotel review

Doing what it says on the tin and a little more makes this traditional inn stand out from the crowd. The rooms are not just clean, comfortable and newly refurbished but set tranquilly in a quiet courtyard garden. In the inn itself, you’ll find low wooden beams and open fires set within stone walls, plus a friendly bar. Though you won’t find chips on the no-nonsense menu, you will find a range of carefully prepared and hearty dishes. And you can work up an appetite nearby at the vast lake of Kielder Water, which offers a wealth of activities from cycling to sailing.

See what they say

Why do people love staying in your hotel? For many of our guests the Pheasant is just what they want from a country Inn. Not to big but small, cosy, welcoming and offering a great level of comfort, friendly service and good food without being gastro or boutique. We will have been running the Pheasant for 30 years next year and one or two of our staff have been with us nearly as long. Many of our long standing guests are more like friends only they have to pay to stay with us.

What is there to do in the area? We are a little of the beaten track in the heart of beautiful Northumberland National Park, this is a newly designated International dark sky park. This is proving very popular with guests wanting to visit the Kielder Observatory and enjoy our fabulous night skies. The area offers great walking , mountain bike trails around Kielder Water and forest, fishing and we are within easy reach of Hadrians Wall and several historic houses castles and National trust Properties.

What kind of breakfast do you offer? We have a breakfast award from VisitEngland. Our breakfast is very traditional, full Northumbrian if you wish with our butchers sausage bacon and black pudding, local free range eggs, simple poached eggs, scrambled eggs, or a choice of cold meats, cheese, bread, croissants, pancakes and fresh fruit from the buffet.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? We serve bar lunches and evening meals every day from our blackboard menus. Sunday Lunch as well . Our style of food is homely traditional using fresh and as local as is feasibly possible produce. Slow roasted Northumbrian lamb is perhaps our signature dish but expect to see Twice baked cheese souffles , Steak and kidney ,Game and Chicken and Ham Pies ,simply cooked fresh fish, seasonal salads and homemade puds. Chips don’t feature on our menu. Most guests who stay will eat with us but if they want to go further afield we can suggest some alternatives.

Which are your most poular room types, and why? We have four doubles ,four twins one of which is a family room. We are a country pub so none of our rooms are vast but all have en-suite facilities and are well appointed and spotlessly cleaned by our girls. We currently hold a four star silver award from VisitEngland.

What message would you like to give to Hotel Guru readers? If you are looking for a quiet escape far from the madding crowd with no mobile signal, dark skies, a cosy country pub with good honest food, great beer by a real fire we look forward to welcoming you.
