This 15th century pub oozes character, boasting beautifully carved beams, splendidly uneven walls and creaky, sloping floors. Fantastically located in the charming, historic centre of Rye, there’s boutiques, antique shops, old pubs and restaurants all on the doorstep and the beaches around Camber Sands a short drive. The bar is cosy and lively, and the restaurant offers surprisingly good seasonal dishes using local ingredients such as Winchelsea beef, Romney Marsh Lamb and fish caught and delivered daily from Rye Harbour. There’s a decent wine list and a good selection of craft beers and local ales. The five guest rooms are simply furnished and comfortable and traditional, if not exceptional, but old pictures, antiques and bric-a-brac enhance the historic feel.
