“A miniature Georgian mansion, surrounded by lawned gardens yet within 10 minutes of Lincoln city centre. Its restaurant has a well-deserved reputation while bedrooms offer a choice of traditional or contemporary style.”

Hotel review

If you want to explore Lincoln’s historic riches but from the peace of a country-house hotel, this ticks the box. Three miles to the east of the city, in the one-street village of Washingborough, the former rectory is a perfect pocket-size Georgian mansion, all soft golden stone, large sash windows and lavender-bordered lawns. Inside, a comfortably traditional style – William Morris wallpapers and mis-matched sofas - mixes with a contemporary elegance – bold tartan carpets and pale-washed panelled walls - giving a homely rather than over-designed look. Indeed, it’s the friendliness of the staff in this family-run hotel that strikes you most, and makes you forgive the odd clashing style. The 20 bedrooms, too, offer a choice of traditional and contemporary. The former, all in the main house and with the best views, have extravagant curtains and the occasional antique. The sleeker contemporary rooms are in the former coach house, some with private patios. Food has a deserved reputation with a choice of fine dining or gutsier bistro dishes. Leave room for afternoon tea; the scones are heavenly. Just the thing after a day coping with Lincoln’s steep streets – yes, it’s built on a hill – and enjoyed preferably on the terrace soaking up the afternoon sun.
