This Rocky Mountain village was established in the late nineteenth century as a camp for workers on the Canadian Pacific Railway and was originally known as ‘Third Siding’. When the route was completed in 1885 the company built a smart hotel here with a view to encouraging tourists to the area.
The village has a variety of quaint gift shops, restaurants and places to stay and there is a thriving artistic community from painters to potters to musicians.
Yoho National Park, which became a world heritage site in 1984, has its administrative offices here. The park itself has a wealth of wildlife, including; timber wolf, moose,elk, cougar, lynx, grizzly and black bear to name but a few.
The Emerald Lake, the largest of the park’s 61 lakes is spectacularly beautiful and an absolute "must-see"!
Also of interest may be the spiral train tunnel through Cathedral and Ogden mountains or the Takakkaw Falls - the third tallest in Canada.
In winter Field becomes a playground for skiers and snow-boarders - it's located between Lake Louise and Kicking Horse. For those who prefer cross country skiing, there are trails from the village. Other winter activities include snow-shoeing and dog sledding......there really is something for everyone!
