Tuscan tourists often overlook Grosseto, despite its numerous splendid palazzos and incredible wall defences. And it's the fact that so many overlook it that draws those who are looking for an authentically Italian Tuscan town.. The accommodation options here are varied to say the least and our pick of the best places to stay in Grosseto include a former Medici hunting lodge, and a luxurious resort overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Grosseto makes a great base for anyone looking for a multi-faceted holiday. It's just 14km from the coast, it has a pretty historic centre circled by stunning medieval walls and boasts one of the best archaeology museums in Tuscany, plus it is the ideal hub for anyone wanting to explore the wider Maremma region and its lovely countryside.

Grosseto’s lack of popularity with visitors does translate to limited accommodation options within its walls. But if you scan a bit further afield you might find some more properties worth putting looking at, including the Villa Talamo, an elegant villa turned B&B overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Conti di San Bonifacio, a romantic wine estate. And there are plenty of great places to stay on the coast just down from Grosseto, around Castiglione della Pescaia.

For a special occasion

  • Once a Medici hunting estate, and set on acres of woodland, L'Andana today is still very much a luxurious choice, wth 33 rooms and suites, three swimming pools, two very fine restaurants, and an impressive spa. The decor blends the Medici’s rural opulence with French chateau chic. One of the chefs has garnered a couple of Michelin stars, and some of his wisdom might come down to you via onsite cooking classes. There’s also golf, tennis and horse riding available. And a children’s playground.

For sea views

  • Cala del Porto is a small but luxurious resort overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, across a bright blue lagoon pool and landscaped gardens. The 41 rooms and suites have classic decor and private balconies with sea views. The facilities are generous, and there are two restaurants, both with great seafood choices.

For the views

  • The Hotel della Fortezza has been converted from an 11th Century fortress, with beautiful and commanding views over its hilltop town, Sorano, and the surrounding region.  The hotel has 16 rooms and suites, simply and traditionally decorated, with terracotta tiled floors, exposed beams on the ceiling, whitewashed walls and dark wood antiques.  It also has an impressive collection of medieval military equipment - as well as the fortress-y architecture.  More affordable because it’s off the tourist trail, it’s none the less a gorgeous part of the world.  There are family suites if you need one, and the restaurant serves Tuscan cuisine. 

For a tuscan escape

  • The Agriturismo Sant'Egle is a charmingly rustic, eco-friendly hotel converted from a farmhouse in the heart of the countryside.  Grape vines surround the hotel pool, some of the seven rooms and suites have open fireplaces, and everywhere there are exposed beams and stonework.  The restaurant serves produce grown onsite, and there’s a little shop too.  They offer natural spa treatments, massage and yoga, and you can borrow a bike and explore.  Adults only.

Travel information

  • Grosseto’s closest international airport as the crow flies is Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci, which is about two hours drive, or four and a half hours on the train. But many visitors will probably find it easier to arrive in to Pisa Airport, which is about an hour and a half's drive away, or about two hours on the train. Both options from Pisa are scenic trips along a beautiful stretch of Tuscan coastline. It also has its own small airport, Grosseto Baccarini Airport, but its use is intermittent.

  • Just 14kms from the Tyrrhenian Sea, which opens onto the Mediterranean, Grosseto has the Mediterranean hot, dry summers and mild winters. Spring warms into summer, and in July and August you can expect temperatures around 30°C, so if you prefer milder temperatures April and June will be the best time to visit Grosseto. Easter in Italy is always a special time to visit.
