About Verona

It's not hard to work out why Verona is so popular: it’s a prized location in Italian and European power struggles; has some of the finest Roman, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture you'll find anywhere on the peninsula, arranged on pretty piazzas and a tangle of streets; and a history dating back to Roman times, which includes family feuds, romance and drama enough to inspire Shakespeare to lay his scenes for Romeo and Juliet and Two Gentlemen of Verona here. It’s also got art, romance, and a 1st century amphitheatre, the Arena di Verona, which hosts an annual opera festival. The best places to stay in Verona offer easy access to a number of features from this list. We recommend converted palazzos dripping with romance and just moments from the Arena di Verona, historic townhouses close to Juliet’s House, luxurious hotels with impressive art and antiques, romantic guesthouses and B&Bs, and discreet apart-hotels among accommodation options.

Verona is a relatively easy city to explore on foot, with the majority of its highlights positioned within a bend in the river Adige, around the Basilica di San Zano Maggiore, an especially impressive Romanesque structure. This is where you’ll find the rosy-coloured Roman amphitheatre, many of the city’s most elegant churches, the old town, and Juliet’s House. Many of the best places to stay in Verona are also within this small area, so ideally located for explorations!

Verona’s summer opera season is well known, and attended, but Verona also hosts a Shakespeare Festival, a Carnival, and the Festa del Nodo d’Amore — celebrating tortellini! While many people book into the best places to stay in Verona during the summer months, Verona’s humid winters, with their mysterious fog, are romantic too.

The Best Places to Stay in Verona

For the Album

  • A proper 18th century palazzo on a grand scale, the Palazzo Monga comes complete with gorgeous original parquet floors, detailed plasterwork, graceful chandeliers and grand ceilings. Within are just three suites and one room, and all feel gloriously luxurious, decorated with antiques from the period, and opulent fabrics. Despite there being so few rooms, the Palazzo also has a sauna and gym for guests to enjoy. It may seem to flash for your kids, but the size of these rooms do make them ideal for families.
  • The Gabbia d'Oro is a hotel like no other, akin to staying overnight in a luxurious antique shop. Expect original stone and beams, warm, polished woodwork, and the aforementioned collection of gorgeous antiques. It sounds overdone, but the decor has taste and wit. Most of the 27 guest rooms are suites. The restaurant has plenty of charm too, as does the bar.

For a Special Occasion

  • The Palazzo Victoria is a luxurious affair, just a few minutes' stroll from the Arena di Verona. Its facade is impressively historic, but within this hotel manages to be both historically impressive and offer all the chicest style and contemporary gadgets. Its 58 rooms and 12 suites feature both wonderful original features — like marble or parquet floors, frescoes, and spacious scale — as well as design furniture and state-of-the-art gadgets. The restaurant serves local cuisine, the bar is super chic, and there’s a pool table too. Luxurious, but still family-friendly.
  • In the heart of historic Verona, just a short stroll from Juliet’s House, Il Relais is a four room B&B converted from a palazzo, and offering 19th century charm and contemporary comfort. Expect urns, oil paintings and antiques, but also marble bathrooms, and friendly staff. A wonderful home from home.

For the Opera

  • Right in the centre of town, just moments from the Arena di Verona, the Escalus Suites are a collection of just six apartment-sized suites, with smart, contemporary decor in neutral colours, and well proportioned furniture. All the have tea and coffee-making facilities, and some have small kitchenettes. Breakfast is delivered to your door at a time of your choosing and there are snacks laid out by a friendly concierge. Perfect for a personalised welcome.

For Romantics

  • With its six rooms all named after famous lovers, the Relais Ristori is declaring its romantic intent. The decor has something of the Baroque fairytale palace about it, with pastel coloured walls, plenty of gold and gilt, and dramatic four-poster beds. Most of the rooms look out over the hotel’s courtyard, which is also well set up for romantics. No restaurant, but they do offer breakfast.
  • The Locanda al Vescovo is a hotel with a small, pampering spa, close to the Porto Vescovo Verona. Inside are ten rooms, decorated with beamed ceilings, wood floors, and natural stone, which lends a cavernous effect, especially in the spa and the breakfast room, which are larger spaces. When you add the coloured lighting, the effect is very contemporary. The restaurant is romantic.

For a City Escape

  • Stylish and discreet, Cinque Rooms is collection of just five rooms, which you enter directly from the street, sans Reception. So the rooms are a bit like tiny, ground floor apartments, with large mirrored windows onto the street, and soundproofing. Within are all the creature comforts you might need, a Nespresso machine, sound system, and a fully stocked mini bar, plus stylish, yet unfussy decor.
  • Relais Fra Lorenzo is an impressively converted villa, close to the Parco delle Colombare, which overlooks the centre of Verona from its charming lawns and its six lovely rooms. Guests are still within a pleasant walk of the city centre, and have a peaceful haven to return to after sightseeing, including a lovely outdoor pool, lounge and bar. There’s no restaurant onsite, but there are plenty locally. Intimate and peaceful.

For Great Value

  • Despite the name, the Hotel Bologna is actually in the historic heart of Verona, facing the picturesque Piazza Brà, and just a few moments from the Arena di Verona. Converted from a charming townhouse, its 32 rooms and suites pffer a fairly classic hotel style, with rather grand headboards, cosy lamp-light, and elegantly dramatic drapes. The best suite has a terrace with private outdoor hot tub. The restaurant specialises in Venetian cuisine.
  • The Hotel Accademia is another perfectly located hotel, this time close to Juliet’s House and the Piazza delle Erbe. The stone facade is elegantly grand, and while the interiors are a little dated, you might just as much see them as ‘classically Italian’: think plush, coloured carpets, chandeliers and dark wood. There are 94 rooms and suites, in an excellent range of shapes and sizes, and a friendly atmosphere.

Best B&Bs and Guesthouses

  • Il Relais dell'Abbazia is a three room B&B converted from a Benedictine monastery in San Zeno. There’s nothing of the monk’s cell about these rooms, they’re light and airy, with contemporary fireplaces, pale wood furnishings and accents in rattan. Breakfast is an impressive spread, served in the charming garden when the weather allows.

Outside Verona

  • If you're looking for a private spot in which to woo your Juliet, the Byblos Art Hotel Villa Amista is our recommendation. Just outside of town, this hotel is like something from The Great Gatsby, but with a twist of modern art. So it's perfect for design conscious Romeos. Expect a perfect Baroque base, topped with bold colours, contemporary art, Venetian chandeliers, and Scandi furnishings, plus the gardens have a beautiful pool. The spa and restaurant are excellent too.

Travel Information

  • Verona’s airport is called Verona Villafranca Airport, and is a short distance from the centre of town — around ten minutes by car or taxi, or 15 minutes by bus, number 199. Verona is also easily reached from Venice airport, Marco Polo, which is just over an hour and a half away by public transport, or around an hour by road. Verona’s station is right in the centre of town, and well connected to other large European centres.
  • If you plan to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • With numerous museums and galleries, Verona is a year round destination, however it’s certainly busier with visitors in the summer months. If you are visiting in summer expect hot, sunny weather, but Verona’s temperatures are relatively mild at both ends of the temperature scale, by Italian standards. The Verona Arena Opera season runs between June and August. Spring and autumn are quieter times to visit, and the weather can be lovely, though you should allow for the possibility of rain. In fact you should allow for a certain amount of humidity whenever you visit Verona. Some of Verona’s attractions run reduced hours during the cooler months, but everything is fully open by March. If you visit Verona in winter, and the Christmas festivities are especially lovely here, though be prepared for fog too.
