About Cuenca
Less than two hours southeast of Madrid, the little hillside town of Cuenca has long captured the imagination of travellers from Spain and further afield. Its iconic casas colgadas — or ‘hanging houses’ — cling to the craggy cliffs and dramatic gorges which surround the old town, giving the area a whimsical fairytale appeal. Cuenca’s old town, too, will delight heritage aficionados. The best places to stay in Cuenca are scattered between the historic quarter and the surrounding countryside, perfect for a relaxed holiday as a couple or with family and friends.
Central Cuenca is a maze of winding medieval streets lined with historic residences built of golden stone. The Gothic Catedral de Santa María la Mayor, on Plaza Major, is particularly striking, as is the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art. The Castile-La Mancha region is studded with fascinating archaeological remains, some of which are detailed at Cuenca’s excellent Museo de Paleontologia de Castilla-La Mancha — another one not to miss!
Admire the hanging houses and the town’s ancient fortifications from the Puente de San Pablo, and venture into the surrounding hills for scenic hikes, mountain bike excursions and horse rides. The owners of one of the best places to stay in Cuenca even run their own adventure company; outdoorsy travellers need look no further for activity inspiration.
