9 Best Luxury Hotels in Porto

Palacio Freixo

Picturesque Porto is a very accessible city with its compact size making it a good option for a quick city break. Beautiful alleyways wind through the historic quarter opening onto the banks of the Rio Douro. With a thriving food scene and of course, the city's world-renowned Port to sample — there is plenty to be enjoyed here. The hotel scene is equally as impressive with several of the best properties set in carefully converted historic buildings. For those who want to really splash out, our hotel experts have compiled a collection of the best luxury hotels in Porto. Whether you are in search of a stylish design hotel, a chic boutique, a heritage stay or a hotel with Michelin-starred dining — there is something to suit most tastes here. So why not browse through our collection to start planning your next city break?

For the design

Armazem Luxury Hotel

  • Vila Foz is set in a heritage Porto property with stylish rooms and suites that feature contemporary design with a modernist twist. Complete with a popular seafood restaurant and a sleek spa — this is a stylish Porto base.
  • Armazém Luxury Housing started out as a warehouse in downtown Porto, close to the river and Sé do Porto, Porto’s cathedral, but what was a warehouse in the 19th century, is now a collection of 13 self-contained apartments. The decor is simple, making the most of the building’s original exposed stone walls, wood and beamed ceilings, and huge windows. Definitely warehouse chic, and ideal for families and groups.

For foodies

The Yeatman

  • Located on the other side of the river mouth from Porto’s historic centre, The Yeatman is able to offer views of Porto. And it certainly looks pretty from here. The Yeatman is one of Porto’s grand dames, with 82 spacious, luxurious rooms and suites, a two Michelin starred restaurant, an impressive Vinothérapie spa with Roman tepidarium and hamman, spacious grounds, and one of Porto’s most beautiful infinity pools.

For traditional grandeur

Le Monumental Palace

  • Le Monumental Palace is deserving of its grand name, a wonderful Art Deco era building with a grand Gothic facade to match its neighbours on Avenida dos Aliados, Porto’s magnificent main avenue. This is a relatively freshly refurbished hotel, though, with 76 newly designed and decorated rooms and suites, a state-of-the-art Nuxe spa with a heated pool, and two excellent restaurants. The first is the stylish Monumental Cafe, a grand affair when it opened in the 30s, and now returned to its grandeur, and a gastronomic option, Le Monument. Our Gurus love the American Bar too.
  • Palacio Freixo offers palatial splendour on the banks of the Douro. A sumptuous 18th-century construction with parquet floors, frescoes and ceiling panels, and a Hall of Mirrors. Contemporary rooms are minimalist in design and most offer fab views. A luxury choice with a spa, infinity pool, and several dining options.
  • The Hotel Infante Sagres is another of Porto’s grand dame hotels, an historic and very charming choice - actually Porto’s very first five star hotel, located just off the magical Avenida dos Aliados. The Infante Sagres’ original features include colourful tiles, parquet floors, stained glass and wrought iron, beamed ceilings and chandeliers. The 85 rooms and suites are elegant, decorated with original antiques and contemporary art, the spa is Asian inspired, and the restaurant is gorgeous. As is the pool.
  • Torel Palace, Porto is a 24 room hotel housed in the beautiful 19th century Palacete Campos Navarro. Ornate interiors blend maximalist design with contemporary art, all paying homage to the greats of Portuguese literature. An emerald-green lap pool is a welcome addition.

For a boutique

M Maison Particuliere

  • M Maison Particuliere is a 16th-century Portuguese townhouse turned 5-star boutique hotel. The hotel's ten suites are luxuriously designed, some with Picasso hangings, some with private patios. All come with a private butler. This is intimate luxury defined.

For the views

Torel Avantgarde

  • Torel Avantgarde is a chic hillside hotel with great views over Porto, featuring stylish yet homely interiors. Rooms are either bold and colourful or muted and sophisticated, while the indulgent spa and pool are a real highlight. Pick this for a tranquil base, within easy reach of all the action.
