Whitewashed, low-level, one-storey buildings wth a lateral layout and loulaki blue painted windows and doors give Tangaro an almost Greek island feel. This laidback, bohemian 1920s hotel sits in a secluded spot on the ruins of a Roman factory for garum (fermented fish sauce - the ketchup of the ancient world). Ten minutes outside Essaouira, this makes for a great base for those who want tranquility and informality not too far from the medina. Rooms are in individual lodgings and are simple, earthy and comfortable with open fires, local textiles, ensuite bathrooms and each with a small outdoor seating area. There’s a formal dining room in the main building, cosy reading room, lovely chilled-out poolside bar/restaurant and small treatment area with yoga room. It’s not super polished, more on the shabby chic tip but ideal for groups and families who need space to spread out with a cooling pool and lots of areas to relax in.
