Dark entrance smelling of joss sticks. Some bright rooms, some ordinary. Only a few have a view. But you don’t really come to the Berns to go to bed. The Berns Asian restaurant (Michelin listed), serving Pacific rim fusion in a staggering rococo ballroom of 1863, a smart terrace doing coffee and cakes, and Bistro Berns just outside in the park build up the inner man or woman. The night club and gigs in the concert hall work it off. This is where Axl Rose of Guns N’Roses (a band, grandpa) bit a doorman. The place definitely has personality.

"65 individually decorated rooms, most large and airy, with big windows; many have their own balcony. Lots of wood and contemporary fabrics, with a funky television and hi-fi."
