“Three 17th-century townhouses in the heart of the canal district. Contemporary designs, with old-world touches - dark woods and ornate ceilings. Bedrooms are chic and open-plan. A stylish place to stay. Guests can enjoy the lovely garden with a romantic gazebo, tucked away from the city bustle.”

Hotel Review
Maintaining the feel of its original 17th century merchants’ home setting, the slick Canal House retains characterful original features such as ornate ceilings and fireplaces, but also, in its newly renovated guise, adds 21st century glamour and comfort. Its new owners are British group Curious Hotels, who also own Cowley Manor in Gloucestershire and L’Hotel in Paris, and they have employed modish design company Concrete to rethink the interiors. They’ve used the chiaroscuro palette of traditional Dutch genre paintings, some examples of which can be found adorning bedroom walls. Divided into five types, from Good to Best, the bedrooms have all the amenities you’d expect, including the sometimes troublesome open-to-view bath and washbasin. But if you’re cool with baring all to your partner, then this is the new cool place to be.

Canal House
Three historic canal houses in a prime location, given a makeover that might not be to all tastes, but retaining an air of sedate luxury. The pretty garden courtyard is a place to linger, and the staff are genuinely friendly, and well-informed about less touristy parts of the city.
