“A stunning historic country house hotel in the heart of Aberdeenshire's whisky country. Smart rooms and suites: some traditional, others in the new wing totally contemporary. Atmospheric cave bar and 2AA Rosette Pineapple restaurant. Plus a highly recommended golf course. Simply superb!”

Hotel review

A stay at Meldrum House will not disappoint even the pickiest of guests. The property is renowned for its warm welcome and top quality hospitality (Meldrum won a national award for most hospitable hotel in Scotland 2019), and a stay here is a bit like receiving a big bear hug from an old friend! Approached via a long rhododendron-lined drive (come in early June to see them at their best), you'll immediately feel like you're arriving at a haven where you can switch off and relax. The main house is stunning; it dates back to the 13th century and is a turreted and atmospheric typically Scottish Baronial mansion. Inside, the stately feel continues with antique furnishings, walls adorned with a wealth of old oil paintings and drawings that evoke the history of the place, and antler light fittings. Plenty of open fires add to the feel and will certainly welcome you home after a chilly Autumn or Winter excursion. Sink into one of the large sofas in the drawing room and enjoy afternoon tea or a pre- or post-dinner drink in comfort. There are a handful of rooms in the Manor house - these are individually designed and evoke the grandeur and history of this place - and further rooms in a classic contemporary style across from the main house in the stables. What's really clever here is that the owners have added a bang-up-to-date contemporary wing to the property, but it's been located at the back, with stunning views over the golf course, so as not to detract from the original building. Here the spacious rooms are as contemporary as their exterior; smart interiors in silver and grey with floor to ceiling windows which maximise the beautiful views, wonderfully comfy beds and excellent bathrooms with monsoon rain showers and complimentary Templespa toiletries. Dining at Meldrum is a bit of a treat too. You can opt for Pineapple - a grill restaurant where the emphasis is on showcasing the best meat and seafood that the region has to offer, or 1236 at the Cave Bar where things are more casual, gastropub style. Keen golfers should definitely add Meldrum to their list of places to stay and play. The beautifully maintained 18 hole parkland course will challenge the best - there are water features, dog-legs and bunkers aplenty! And because you can only play if you're a member or hotel guest, it's guaranteed to be a quiet relaxed round. To sum up, Meldrum House is a wonderful place, and one that you'd be happy to return to again and again. Whether you're looking for a romantic break, want to explore Aberdeenshire's Whisky heritage, or fancy playing a round or two, Meldrum House should be on your radar!
