With two poolside bars alongside the biggest and best pool in the walled city and another two bars inside, guests don’t have to go far to order one of the Santa Clara’s excellent cocktails. There is an informal brasserie and a smarter restaurant so guests can have a lot of fun without ever leaving the hotel. Divided between the original 17th century building and a newer building around the pool area, the hotel retains some quirky touches. In the convent part the former confession boxes remain outside the chapel, local bands play in the lounge bar some nights and every day at 6pm, waiters dressed as monks put candles on the tables in the courtyard to an accompaniment of chapel music. There is a special wine cellar in which wine and cheese tastings are held. For those who have not quite switched off into relaxation mode (and presumably for iPad deniers) the hotel downloads and prints international newspapers for guests to read at breakfast. Spacious rooms and suites, many with balconies, have huge comfortable beds and every convenience imaginable including a pillow menu.
