The Greyhound Inn, Letcombe Regis, is set at the foot of the Ridgeway and just a few miles from the White Horse at Uffington, it’s also just 2 miles from Wantage, birthplace of King Alfred who burnt the tarts and home to the Betjamin autumn literary festival and an easy drive to Oxford and it’s dreaming spires - so perfectly positioned for a country escape. The village itself is picture perfect and thriving with the church of St Andrew, mentioned in the Domesday Book, at it’s centre. It’s not on the way to anywhere so peaceful and unspoilt. The Greyhound itself is Grade II listed, dating from circa 1790 but is hardly architecturally inspiring, more a good example of a brick village house which was turned into a pub around 1870. However, it’s inside that is a good deal more interesting. It’s a quintessential English pub, warm and spirited with a good selection of beers. It’s the sort of place where you would happily pop in for a quick one and could easily be persuaded to stay longer. The kitchen is under the control of award winning Phil Currie and the standard is very high indeed without being fussy - some pub classics but also imaginative combinations with intense flavours using seasonal ingredients, plus there’s a good wine list too. Eight rooms ranging in size from small to superior plus two family suites. Nothing fancy just very thoughtfully put together with luxury comfy Hypnos beds, high thread count sheets, Roberts radios, easy to use bedside lights, cupboards etc plus new bathrooms with excellent rain showers and some with baths. All of them supplied with Bramley natural bath and body products. What’s not to like and perfect for a country escape, walking, cycling and other activities on your doorstep, plus delicious food served by ever friendly staff and just a few stairs to climb to a perfect nights' sleep.
