Opposite the Tron Kirk, where South Bridge meets the High Street, the couthy Inn on the Mile – a bar with kitchen and rooms - is a short stroll from Waverley Station and equally handy for Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, museums and art galleries. Tables outside offer a grandstand view of the Royal Mile. Inside, the ground floor bar-restaurant is popular with locals as well as visitors, with live music every night except Sunday. Upstairs, bedrooms are more chic than the unpretentious public areas might lead you to expect, with grey and cream paintwork and limewashed plank floors. Treats include free mineral water and chocolate-covered strawberries. Facilities include bathrobes and slippers, minibar and tea and coffee maker. Absent minded guests who have forgotten their toothbrush will find amenities including dental kits in bathrooms. The more spacious 'Royal Mile' rooms have a view of the eponymous thoroughfare and bathrooms with free-standing tubs. Secondary double glazing in all bedrooms reduces street noise. Guests may use the pool and health club at the Radisson Blu, next door, for a nominal £10 fee.

'This former Royal Mile bank — a scaled-down layer cake of classical stone with colonnade and pediment — has been successfully converted into a lively pub with unexpectedly serene hotel rooms above. There are nine bright, crisply contemporary bedrooms in high-ceilinged rooms and a smart bar serving decent food.'
