A short distance from Vita Sackville-West’s Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens is The Milk House, a contemporary gastropub with rooms. Its name harks back to the pub’s address on the previously-named Mylk Street, which runs through the centre of this pretty Kent village.Today, there are hints of a dairy theme throughout, from milk pails to room names, such as ‘The Churn’ and ‘The Buttery’. The four bedrooms, all situated above the restaurant, are decorated in fresh, neutral colours with comfortable beds, double-glazed windows and bathrooms, complete with local Romney Marsh natural lanolin products. The light and airy restaurant has a seasonal menu, with an emphasis on local produce, while the farmhouse furniture, painted beams and freshly-cut flowers complete the country vibe. Unpretentious and comfortable, The Milk House makes an ideal bolthole for exploring this part of the Garden of England.

A Sissinghurst hotel offering contemporary rooms, good food and a thriving bar. Locals attend in hoards; even on a Monday evening, the place was packed. Lunchtimes are busy too; this is an all-day affair. It's the perfect place to stay in order to visit Sissinghurst, Bodiam Castle and the Kent Weald.
