“A restored 17th century pub in the charming village of Batcombe, an old style country inn of low ceilings, a wooden bar, and open fires, with 21st century comforts. Five sumptuous bedrooms and spectacular seasonal dishes from Margot Henderson, a well-respected London chef. ”

Hotel review

Award winning Three Horseshoes in Batcombe, Somerset and it's easy to see why. This charming restored pub with its orignal flagstone floors and beamed ceilings is home to five beautiful rooms, filled with antiques, rugs and art. They are bright and airy with modern en-suite bathrooms featuring plenty of fluffy towels and the eco-friendly, paraben-free Wildsmith products - our favourite is room 4 which has high vaulted ceilings and views onto the terrace and garden. Coffee machines are standard in each of the rooms; there are no fridges so if you would like some fresh milk just nip to reception for a jug. Terracotta pots filled with plants and bulbs and are dotted around the outdoor terraces which capture the evening sun, the ideal spot for a pre-dinner drink. The menu, created by Margot Henderson, changes every day and includes specials and mouthwatering dishes with strong flavours such as devilled kidneys on toast, beef and pickled walnut pie and gurnard with fennel and saffron. Breakfast and dinner are accompanied by a lit woodburner adding a cosiness to the the dining room. The breakfast menu is short and you maybe be disappointed if you're after a cappuccino as only coffee from a cafetière is served here, though as with everything they serve here it is delicious!

Just a 40-minute drive from Bath and not far from Frome this little gem is off the beaten track, down a narrow country lane and is the perfect country escape at any time of the year. In fact we think it would be a great place to take over with friends for a celebration.

I’ve always had fantasies about the countryside.

Think of a country village pub and most people know what it’s supposed to be,” says former gallerist and investor Max Wigram. “Low ceilings, wooden bar, open fire.”
