About Bequia
The second-largest of the many islands which make up the gorgeous Grenadines, Bequia is laid-back, picturesque and just seven square miles in size — perfect for a relaxed Caribbean beach break as a couple or with family and friends. Accommodation options range from simple beachfront guesthouses to romantic resorts fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. Whether you’re keen to delve into the region’s history, to unwind at the beach or to dive in marvellously clear waters, the best places to stay in Bequia are within easy reach of it all.
Set on impressive Admiralty Bay, Port Elizabeth is Bequia’s main hub. Expect lively seaside eateries, independent boutiques and a bustling farmers’ market. Regular ferries from nearby St Vincent dock at Port Elizabeth, so much of the action is centred in this area. History buffs should pop into St Mary’s Church, which dates back to 1829. Nearby Princess Margaret Beach is lauded as the most beautiful on the island, and the calm, clear waters are wonderful for swimming and snorkelling as a family. Lower Bay, to the south, is also a favourite. There are more than 25 dive sites around Bequia, and hawksbill turtles, moray eels, lobsters and myriad fish are regularly spotted.
Meaning ‘island of the clouds’ in ancient Arawak, Bequia has a fascinating past as a fishing and farming centre for the Arawaks and Caribs, before falling to the French, then the British, and becoming a producer of rum, molasses, coffee, indigo and arrowroot. Evidence of this complex history can still be seen at Hamilton Battery and Lookout, or on hikes through the island’s interior. One of the best places to stay in Bequia is set on an old sugar plantation — the tours are excellent. Embrace Bequia’s slow-paced vibe during your trip, and don’t miss the chance to catch some live music whilst savouring the local rum!
