About Kiel

Originally a small port town on the Baltic Sea, Kiel has grown into a beautiful waterfront city. Now the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, the city has long been of great strategic importance to northern Germany. Famed as a ship-building centre, Kiel also boasts some striking architecture and an excellent university. Most of the best places to stay in Kiel promise superb waterfront views, further reflecting the importance of the ocean to this coastal hub.

Cycle or stroll around Kiel’s old town centre for a sense of its rich character. The beautiful Church of St Nicholas, built in the 13th century, is the city’s oldest building, and well worth exploring. Step inside the Rathaus and the harbour-facing Opera House, or delve into Kiel’s past at the Fischhalle Maritime Museum. The Zoologisches Museum is also excellent.

Tour the Old and the New Botanical Gardens to marvel at rare flowers, plants and trees, or head out on the water for marvellous sailing excursions and sunset cruises. The Kiel Fjord is spectacular — and the city is at its most impressive when seen from the sea. Round off busy days with an evening drink at one of the best places to stay in Kiel; those with harbourside restaurants are especially lively.
