For many visitors, the most important starting point is deciding whether or not to begin in Mykonos Town. A striking community of white-painted houses — many with fascinating histories — set close to the ocean, this is also the hub of the island’s glitzy nightlife scene. You’ll find hip restaurants, bars and eateries clustered along the waterfront, and plenty of designer boutiques, relaxed tavernas and quirky art galleries lining the narrow lanes of the oldest parts of town. Even if late-night parties aren’t top of your list, this is a magical place to wander around during the day.

Follow walking or cycling trails, head to the beach to sunbathe and swim, or try paddle boarding and sailing. Mykonos is a fabulous destination, and a hugely busy one during the summer months. For Boutique Chic in Mykonos Town

Bill And Coo has a fabulous reputation for superb style and service. Close to the heart of Mykonos Town, this upmarket boutique bolthole’s 24 spacious rooms and suites are wonderfully decorated. A gourmet Mediterranean restaurant and relaxing pool area complete the picture.
Tharroe of Mykonos is a gorgeous boutique base on the edge of town. Set on a hilltop, it promises dazzling views from its communal spaces as well as from some of the 26 hip guest rooms and suites, the best of which have balconies and hot tubs. Sink into the pool or sip cocktails on the terrace after days of shopping, old town strolling and late-night parties.
Vencia Boutique Hotel, near the centre of Mykonos Town, has 34 contemporary rooms and suites as well as an inviting infinity pool overlooking the bay. Peaceful and indulgent, this hotel is also perfectly placed for making the most of all the fun that Mykonos Town has to offer. The bar is a trendy spot to start your evening.

For a Design-Led Escape

Kalesma’s 27 super-stylish suites and villas were designed to resemble traditional island houses centred around a square. Expect crisp monochromatic interiors, beautiful ocean views and a fabulous restaurant, which has a reputation for being amongst the best on the island. Very hip.
Myconian Avaton, overlooking striking Elia beach, has 85 design-led rooms, suites and villas. Spaces have a pared-back, modern minimalist feel, with natural wood furnishings, floor-to-ceiling windows framing epic ocean views, and original artworks displayed throughout. Villas have their own kitchens, but there are excellent eateries and a rejuvenating spa, too.
Mykonos Theoxenia oozes 1960s glamour. Reminiscent of the set of a classic Bond film, this is an elegant oasis just moments from Mykonos Town. Feast at the gastronomic restaurant, enjoy rejuvenating wellness treatments, tai chi and yoga, or kick back in one of 52 rooms and suites after a big night out.

For Families

Osom Resort is a quiet hotel with just 12 spacious rooms and suites in Ornos. Family suites have private terraces and ocean views, as well as space for extra beds. Little ones will love the big swimming pool, and the beach is a few minutes’ walk away.
Leonis Summer Houses, a collection of self-contained studios and private villas overlooking Korfu and Ornos beaches, will also delight families. The largest of the villas sleep four guests, with separate lounge and dining areas as well as private terraces. Breakfasts are served, but guests can otherwise cook independently. The spa and pool are great for unwinding.
Myconian Villa Collection is a sensational escape, with family-friendly spaces aplenty, including a children’s pool and babysitting services. The addition of print and pattern lifts white-on-white interiors, creating a joyful atmosphere. There’s a wonderful spa and gourmet eatery, too.
Nissaki Boutique Hotel has only 25 rooms, suites and villas, the largest of which are perfect for families. Overlooking Psarou beach, this is a great choice for a classic seaside holiday with guests of all ages.

For Romance

Kensho Boutique Hotel is a honeymoon favourite. Many of the 35 rooms and suites have their own balconies and plunge pools, whilst the main swimming pool’s lighting, views and setting are pretty spectacular too. Mediterranean dishes receive a Asian or Latin twist in the hip eatery. A very indulgent choice.
Cavo Tagoo is a haven of ocean-facing rooms, suites and villas with ribbon-draped four poster beds, private balconies, plunge pools and incredible sunset views. Gather at the elegant bar or Greek and Mediterranean restaurant after restorative spa treatments.
Livin Mykonos is a swish 26-room hideaway close to Psarou beach. There’s an idyllic sense of privacy and tranquility — in part because it’s adults only. Kick back by the pool, at the elegant bar or in the stylish restaurant. Very cool.
Boheme has 20 fabulous suites with contemporary furnishings set against a minimalist Cycladic palette of classic white. Savour modern Greek cuisine overlooking the Aegean, taste terrific cocktails and float around the refreshing pool. Hugely romantic.
Mykonos Ammos Hotel is a five-star boutique hotel on the shores of Ornos beach. Splashes of blue and grey elevate white-on-white rooms which also feature crisp linens and natural wood tones. The two restaurants are highly regarded, and the bar is perfect for an evening tipple or two. A honeymoon delight.

For a Tranquil Hideaway

The Wild Hotel sits on the cliffs above the sea on the island’s south-eastern side. Guest rooms have a cool, natural feel with pale wood and white — most face the water and the stunning infinity pool. Known for its soothing spa and candlelit dinners, this is a wonderfully romantic hideaway.
Grace Mykonos, north of Mykonos Town, has 32 chic rooms and suites, most with private balconies. Expect superb views, white-on-white interiors, a gorgeous infinity pool and an extensive spa. One for romantics dreaming of a tranquil escape.
Ostraco Suites offers an all-suite escape in the hills. Traditional spaces have wonky whitewashed walls, antique furnishings and private balconies, whilst communal spaces include the pool, terrace and organic restaurant. The best suites come with hot tubs, and there are yoga classes and massages on request.
Archipelagos, a white sugar cube of a building, houses 40 rooms and suites on the quieter south-eastern coast of Mykonos. Think airy blue and white interiors, authentic Greek cuisine at the inviting restaurant, and a serene spa for unwinding in absolute bliss. Romantic and reflective.

For Great Value

My Mykonos, in the centre of town, has 38 rooms and suites in a traditional Greek building. The courtyard pool is a real draw, with a trendy bar and beautiful stone walls. Interiors are minimalistic, and suites are generous. The simpler rooms are very affordable; those with plunge pools are more indulgent.
Almyra Guest Houses offers whitewashed rooms with simple black and white textiles and wooden accents. All spaces are self-catering; the maisonette has the largest living and dining space. Guests share access to the pool, which offers stunning sea views. Affordable and relaxing.
Hotel Rochari is a family-owned favourite in Mykonos Town. Well-priced and welcoming, this hotel has 60 bright rooms, a big swimming pool and terrace, and a good spa. The warm, family feel encourages returning guests — as does the excellent cuisine, using fare sourced from the family’s own farm.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

Fly to Athens International Airport, and hop aboard a ferry from Athens' Piraeus or Rafina ports, or catch a connecting flight to Mykonos Airport. You can then travel into town by bus or taxi.

Expect hot summers, with temperatures reaching around 28°C between June and August, which is also peak season. For fewer crowds and cooler weather travel in April, May or late September, when you can also find great hotel deals.
