For a Rural Escape

The Grand Hotel Terme di Stigliano is a luxurious hotel and spa on a secluded estate in the hills behind Lake Bracciano. Picturesque, traditional, and romantic, the Grand Hotel’s 46 rooms offer space, charm — in the guise of original features and charmingly patterned fabrics — and peaceful rural views. The spa is built into a site with five natural thermal springs, so it’s quite large also. The restaurant serves exemplary regional cuisine, on a sunny terrace with a view, when weather permits.

Ladispoli’s La Posta Vecchia is a gorgeous, 17th century seaside hotel, built on the ruins of an ancient Roman villa. Expect luxury upon luxury, from the peach-coloured facade with its gracious arched windows and grand lawns, to the carefully decorated rooms and suites, which are nothing short of beautiful. The collection of antiques and art is impeccable, with grand bed heads, rich tapestries, gilt, velvet and marble all around. The restaurant has a terrace with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, and a Michelin star, and the chef offers cooking classes; plus you can learn a lot about local Italian wine from the sommelier. The gardens have tennis courts, and the indoor pool is like something from a ancient Roman villa.
San Anselmo's Baroque flamboyance and lavish drapery will transport you back in time to another era. Situated in the smart Aventine district which overlooks Rome, you can enjoy breakfasts in the beautifully tended garden and plan out your day as if the city were a map.

For Romantics

The Villa Clementina is a beautifully converted villa close to the waters of Lake Bracciano, and surrounded by fields of sunflowers. There are only seven rooms and suites, traditionally decorated with exposed beams, tiled floors and hand-painted murals on sandstone walls. The living spaces are cosy and welcoming, and there’s a charming garden with a pool and tennis courts. The Villa’s other great draw is its fine dining restaurant, which specialises in regional cuisine.
The Corner hotel is a beautiful Art Nouveau townhouse on Viale Aventino in Rome — the main road that connects Piazza di Porta Capena and Piazza Albania. Well-located for exploring the sights, it sits just outside of the busiest tourist areas. Beautifully restored to retain many original features, The Corner has oak herringbone flooring and marble fireplaces, and is split over three floors, accessible via a lift. The hotel's ten rooms have a pared-back feel in spite of the rich colour palettes.

For a Beach Escape

The Hotel Punta Rossa is a charming hotel, set right on the rocky shore of the Mediterranean, and surrounded by lush botanical gardens. Our favourite of the 42 rooms and suites have wonderful sea views, as well as plenty of space and simple, traditional decor. The suites are in separate villas (some of the suites are a good size for families), like a little fishermen’s village, with private balconies and all the mod cons. There are two pools, one on a terrace with a ladder to the private beach and the sea. The restaurant spills out onto another terrace, also overlooking the water, and serves seafood, and an excellent local menu. And the spa offers thalassotherapy treatments.
Il Fogliano is a stunning, contemporary hotel with an elegant minimalism that makes the most of its spectacular location almost amongst the sand dunes of the Cicero National Park. There are only 19 rooms and suites, with simple decor that uses plenty of white and makes the most of the views — both of the dunes and the Mediterranean. The atmosphere is relaxed; this is definitely the sort of place you can come to escape, complete with an impressive spa and hydromassage pools, plus a restaurant with spectacular view, a gorgeous terrace area, and of course the beach.

For Families

Within a short stroll of the Pantheon, Rome's Albergo del Senato offers a range of elegant rooms and suites, including triples and apartments which are ideal for families. There's a fabulous roof terrace and a traditional, relaxed vibe throughout, despite the beautiful decor.
Mario de Fiori 37 is a collection of sleek, modern self-catering suites and apartments, right near the Spanish Steps. The best one, on the top floor, has a giant bed nestled in the roof. Whichever room you're in you'll find every comfort and modern gadget you, or your family, might need, plus glossy parquet floors, solid Italian furniture, and shiny bathrooms.

For Fantastic Views

The Hotel Chiaia di Luna is a small but absolutely stunning clifftop property overlooking a beautiful bright blue bay and white cliffs on Ponza. With white-washed walls inside and out, and dripping with bougainvillea and nautical details, this collection of 76 rooms and suites is loved for its views and simplicity. All rooms have large windows, or patio doors leading out to a balcony or terrace, and there’s a shared terrace by the pool-with-a-view. The casual restaurant serves fresh, local cuisine. A tranquil escape.
The Hotel Campo de 'Fiori has a fantastic roof terrace overlooking Rome's skyline. You'll find romantic bedrooms with four poster beds, regally painted walls and frescoed ceilings. And you're in a great location, close to the morning markets.

For Lakeside Location

The Albergo Borgo Vistalago is perfectly positioned: just across the road from Lake Bracciano, in Trevignano Romano. We think the best of the ten rooms and suites are those with the lake views, however there’s a nice variation in decor — ranging from traditional to contemporary — so you might prefer some rooms over others. All have wooden or tiled floors and luxurious bathrooms. And there’s a bar and cafe, and breakfast room that spills out onto a lovely terrace. Some of the rooms would work for families too.

For Great Value

Al Vicolo dei Pescatori is a charming, stone house right next to the shore of Lake Bracciano. This is a traditional home, complete with a beamed wooden ceiling, exposed stone and whitewashed walls, and polished wooden floors. But the bathrooms are all new. Breakfast is an indulgent offering, and you’re within a short and pleasant stroll of Anguillara Sabazia’s bars and restaurants. Adults only.
Testaccio’s Althea Inn is a secluded, penthouse B&B with three spacious rooms with simple decor. The real pleasures are the private, flower-filed balconies — perfect for enjoying an apertivo while the sun goes down over spectacular Rome.

The Casa Montani is a gorgeous little guesthouse right on the Piazza del Popolo, and just five minutes walk from the Spanish Steps. Here there are a handful of beautifully finished rooms and suites all overseen by helpful owners, Giuseppe and Charlotte. The property is family friendly and there's also a little apartment for four — perfect for families or small groups.
The Residenze Torre Colonna is a fantastically chic boutique guesthouse with a rooftop terrace offering spectacular views over Rome. There are just five rooms, all of them romantic, with four poster beds, white washed walls and splashes of modern art.

Travel Information

Rome has Lazio’s two major airports, and many other major transport hubs besides. Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino is Italy’s largest airport, or there’s Ciampino Airport, which is used primarily by the low cost carriers, and is actually closer to the centre of town, but not so well connected by public transport. There’s a capped price for taxis into the centre of Rome from Ciampino. Rome is also easy to get to by train, into either Roma Termini, which is the central station, or Roma Tiburtina, which is just outside.

The busiest time for travel to Lazio is summer. During the summer months some of the inhabitants of Rome will spend time in the cooler, waterside centres — Lake Bracciano or the coastline around Latina, for example — so this is quite a busy time for travel throughout Lazio. Because of Rome, there’s not really a best time of year to visit: autumn is cooler and more pleasant than summer if you’re sightseeing, and the mild, wet winters aren’t really off-putting because many visitors have plenty of indoor activities planned. Rome is a magical place to be around Christmas and New Year, and Easter is extremely pleasant too, because the sunshine draws more people out into the piazzas.
