About Guimaraes

Founded by the famous 9th century warrior Vimara Peres, Guimaraes is a city that's steeped in history. Its historic town centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often referred to as the 'birthplace of Portuguese nationality'. The original medieval centre is remarkably well preserved. What not to miss:

  • There are many museums in Guimaraes to visit but the Alberto Sampaio museum is the one that stands out. Located in three buildings that belonged to the Collegiate Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, it contains art, sculptures and artefacts dating back centuries.
  • The Martins Sarmento Society is one of Portugal's oldest institutions and has two museums in Guimaraes: the Archaeological Museum of the Martins Sarmento Society and the Castro Culture Museum.
  • Guimaraes's UNESCO old town is best explored on foot. Walking around gives you a chance to appreciate the city's rich architectural charm.
  • Paco do Duques de Braganca - Situated on a hilltop adjacent to the town, this impressive palace dates from the fourteenth century. Its interiors are lavish and on a grand scale. The chapel has the most beautiful stained glass.
  • Platform for Arts and Creativity - Based in the Old Market Square, this multi purpose cultural centre was constructed to mark the city’s 2012 ‘European Capital of Culture’. The metallic three storey building host an eclectic range of exhibitions.
  • Centro Cultural Vila Flor - Established in 2005, this multimedia arts centre played the lead role in Guimaraes’ cultural renaissance. It features cinema, theatre, concert cafe and exhibition spaces. The building is a modern extension on an eighteenth century palace.
  • The eleventh century castle which overlooks the town is remarkably well preserved. This was the birthplace of the first King of Portugal. Wander the ramparts and climb the keep!
