For a Special Occasion
- The Abbaye de la Bussiere has been carefully converted from its 12th century use as an abbey into a beautiful, 18 room hotel. Many original features have been retained, like the glorious stained glass windows, vaulted and beamed ceilings and the incredible pillars of the old central nave, now in the hotel restaurant (where you can expect sublime, Michelin starred cuisine). Many of the luxuriously dressed rooms and suites, with their enormous bathrooms, have views over the expansive green parklands, plus there’s a library, a bar and terrace to enjoy too.
For Rural Romance
- From the outside La Borde looks like a charming rural home, with traditional vine-clad stone walls, large shuttered windows, a turret-like tower and mature gardens leading up to the front door. But inside you can see why this property has a five star rating. There are just five rooms and suites, featuring arching exposed beams, tiled floors and rustic features, but beautifully done. And then there’s the pool, and conservatory restaurant with its daily changing menu, and private wine tastings.
- Moulin Renaudiots is a large, elegant country house, charmingly converted into a five room hotel. Cottage gardens with topiary surround the property, and all of the five gorgeous rooms have country views, as well as beamed ceilings, huge beds, design furniture and simple colour schemes. Downstairs there’s a lounge and dining room, where they do a fantastic table d’hote three nights a week, accompanied by local wines. Outside there’s a pool with a view.
For Vineyard Views
- The Hotel La Cueillette occupies an elegant, 19th century chateau overlooking the vineyards of Meursault. The dining room of the gourmet restaurant is exquisitely conserved, complete with Versailles style chandeliers, mirrors, parquet floor and murals; but the 19 rooms and suites are simply dressed, in a pared-back modern style with blonde wood floors, white linens, large windows and contemporary art. There’s a spa — where the grapes from the region are used in therapies — an indoor pool, and an exceptional cellar.
For Château Luxury
- The Château de Vault de Lugny is an impressive mansion-style château — complete with a moat, sitting on 100 acres of beautiful parkland — which can trace its roots back to the 13th century. There are 16 rooms and suites within, all unique and all luxuriously dressed; think toile du jouy draped four-posters, huge windows and cosy working fireplaces. Meals can be served on the terrace or in the atmospheric dining room, and promote the best local produce and recipes. There’s also tennis court, a pool in the vaults under the château, and you can arrange wine tastings, or a hot air balloon trip.
- Built during the Medieval period, the Château de Bagnols has plenty of château magic, including elegant turrets, pillars, vast stone fireplaces and even a bridge over a moat. Today it’s been carefully converted into a 27 room hotel that has retained the original features the château like wall-sized tapestries, murals, tiled floors and ornate fireplaces. There’s also an impressive collection of antiques. And a glorious spa, picturesque pool and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
For Luxury
- Beaune’s Hotel Le Cep is a charmingly historic hotel in the prettiest part of Beaune. It has 64 rooms and suites, and our favourites have fantastically ornate Louis XIV antiques, as well as the more standard beamed ceilings and luxurious feeling decor. The restaurant is a gourmet affair, and the bar has an opulent, but cosy vibe.
For Food Lovers
- La Cote Saint Jacques on the banks of the River Yonne is a bastion of French gastronomy, having held its two Michelin stars for 25 years now. And it has an award-winning spa as well, which incorporates an indoor pool and hot tub — all with river views. This is a great pick for families too, with a children’s menu, a games room and babysitting services available.
