18 Best Wine hotels in Piedmont
For some people, the true home of Italian wines is the Piedmont region. It has more DOCGs (the highest classification of Italian wines) than any other region in Italy. Piedmont is often likened to Burgundy because of its numerous small-scale, family wineries, and their demandingly high standards. As you’ll see from our guide, some of the best wine hotels in Piedmont are around the hills of Le Langhe. This is where the majestic red tannic wines Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera d’Asti are produced and where the Nebbiolo grape is revered. Amongst the white wines, sparkling Moscato d’Asti and Asti Spumante are the most famous. The area has an excellent choice of accommodation with hotels ranging from grand luxury stays to quaint B&Bs. Our hotel experts have scoured the area to bring you a collection of the best wine hotels in Piedmont selected on their location, amenities, service and design. Whether you are looking for a property with a standout restaurant, a spoiling spa retreat, a traditional agriturismo or a great value option — there is something for everyone here. So why not browse through our list to start planning your next wine tasting adventure?
For foodies
- Overlooking the vineyards around Asti, Castello di Villa is a raspberry-pink castle where elegant rooms have open beams and four-poster beds; some have hand-painted murals. It has an excellent wine list and menus of locally sourced food plus it’s within striking distance of around 50 Michelin-starred restaurants.
- Cookery lessons are just one of the treats on offer at La Villa, near Canelli — horse-riding, cycling, and truffle-hunting are some of the others — a grand country mansion with contemporary-style, creamy bedrooms. There’s an outdoor pool, atmospheric restaurant and a 200-plus wine list.
For luxury
- Relais San Maurizio is a converted 17th-century monastery, set amidst picturesque vineyards. Lovingly restored throughout, rooms ooze character. A fantastic restaurant showcases the finest in regional cuisine and the medicinal spa is utterly spoiling.
For romance
- Located not far from Asti, in the heart of Piedmont's wine and truffle country is our newest boutique B&B find, Villa Giara. It's a stunning property with glorious interiors featuring plenty of antiques, textiles and art collected from its owners' global travels. There's a lovely pool and terrace, just ten rooms (the best with balcony or terrace), and no under 13s are allowed. Peace and romance guaranteed.
- Tucked in a quiet village in the Langhe hills, Villa Beccaris, is a softly furnished, romantic retreat with beamed and frescoed ceilings. Walks from the villa take you deep into vineyards and truffle country. There’s also a stunning glass-walled dining room.
- San Giovanni Resort is a stunning hotel in a renovated monastery. Chic rooms have subtle colour schemes, large modern bathrooms and views over the courtyard. There's fantastic Piedmont cuisine, vaulted ceilings, frescoes and exposed brick — a romantic and special atmosphere.
- Relais Sant’Uffizio Wellness & SPA Hotel is a gorgeous four-star hotel in a restored 16th-century monastery featuring beautiful rooms and suites blending contemporary décor with historic features. Add an Italian garden, a gourmet restaurant with a Michelin star and a first-class spa and you have the perfect recipe for a romantic getaway.
For a winery
- Palas Cerequio is an elegant vineyard property set in the picturesque Langhe Hills. Choose from a traditionally styled room in the old part of the building or a chic minimalist room in the new building. The restaurant serves regional dishes and there is the option of wine tasting too.
For an agriturismo
- For complete relaxation, and set amongst its own vineyards, La Casa in Collina near Canelli takes some beating. This beautiful farmhouse — ice-cream pink with pale blue shutters — has just six, antique-filled rooms (some with exposed stone walls), relaxing gardens and an infinity pool from which you can gaze over the vines.
- Tenuta La Romana, near Nizza Monferrato, is a handsome 18th-century farmhouse (built for a Count) surrounded by vineyards, and good truffle-hunting countryside. Rooms are large and traditional, with terracotta tiles and exposed beams, as befits the style of the house.
- Cascina Barac is an agriturismo sitting pretty amongst rolling hills covered in vineyards. Traditionally decorated with warm terracotta hues and antique furniture. With gourmet regional cuisine and wines coming from the farm itself (and truffles) — this is a foodie's paradise.
- Canonica di Corteranzo is a charming agriturismo in the Piedmont countryside. Rustic-chic rooms feature terracotta floors, mahogany sleigh beds, and exposed beam ceilings. With an outdoor pool, orchard, vineyards and exquisite authentic dishes in the restaurant — this property has it all.
- Surrounded by its own vineyards, and with another exceptional wine list, Agriturismo Villa Tiboldi is a country house set in a dreamy location to the north of Alba. Enormous bedrooms have rugs on polished floorboards, lavish drapes and four-poster beds. The fine-dining restaurant is set amongst exposed brick walls and huge arched windows.
For a rural hideaway
- Villa La Favorita is a delightful country hotel, just outside Alba, exuding rustic charm. The ornate rooms are characterful and comfortable with great views of the surrounding vineyards. Enjoy a hearty breakfast of quiche, freshly baked cakes and local meats and cheeses. A quaint country retreat.
- For something more contemporary, look at Il Boscareto. This elegant hotel and spa is surrounded by vineyards (where you can do tastings). Pastel coloured rooms are spacious and light with luxurious bathrooms and large terraces. Complete with gourmet regional dishes and a pampering spa, this is an indulgent country escape.
- Another modern option is Arborina Relais, a chic contemporary offering set in the picturesque rolling Barolo hills. Beautifully styled rooms feature wooden floors, private terraces, soft grey hues and floor to ceiling windows. It also boasts a spoiling spa, fine dining restaurant, and a well-stocked wine bar.
For a castle
- Set amongst the vineyards of Verduno and Barbaresco, southwest of Alba, the 15th-century Real Castello does indeed feel like the ‘real thing’. Rooms are vast and traditional in style with highly polished floors, antique furnishings and painted wall panels. The views from the terrace are stunning plus there’s a chance to take cookery lessons in the hotel’s kitchens.
- Set amongst the same vineyards, a little to the southeast, Castello di Sinio has a more contemporary take on its furnishings. Rustic-chic rooms are bright and colourful, often with white-painted exposed stone walls or beams. The dining room extends into the herb-filled garden.
For great value
- Casa Pavesi is a pretty hotel set in a 19th-century house. Elegant rooms feature four-poster beds, wooden floors and views of Langhe Hills. There's a large garden and a sun terrace where breakfast is served. Great value and well located.
