Hotel Pulitzer

Barcelona is the kind of city you really should stay in the heart of. It’s so lively, and there’s so much going on, what with the tapas bars and fabulous restaurant scene, and the pedestrianised pockets and hidden squares with their architectural masterpieces, and you’re not going to want to miss a moment of it. But that’s no problem because central Barcelona has a great hub of hotels, spreading out from Las Ramblas into Exiample in one direction, and towards the port in the other. And Barcelona’s city centre hotels come in a great range of shapes and sizes. Our list of recommendations for 20 Great Barcelona City Centre Hotels includes a four room apartment hotel just off Passeig de Gràcia, a large luxurious grande dame of a hotel, plenty of choice for families, and for those on a budget, several Michelin stars and a really impressive number of incredible roof terraces — many with pools. Use our guide to the best hotels in Barcelona city centre and start to plan your getaway!

For a hotel with a view

  • With views of the port that will make your Barcelona city break feel quite beach-y, the Hotel Duquesa de Cardona is a chic, polished 16th century townhouse, with 40 rooms and suites. The best views are from the roof terrace, where there’s a hot tub and a small swimming pool in addition to the lively Catalan tapas restaurant and bar. The ‘Port View’ rooms and suites on the highest floors have great views too. And the inside of the hotel favours natural colours and natural materials to stylish effect, and it feels minimal, yet also very Catalan — they’ve got some really beautiful traditional tiles. Downstairs it has a smart cocktail lounge and a Mediterranean restaurant. It’s located on the Passeig de Colom, which is walking distance from many of Barcelona’s main attractions.

Barcelona’s Most Romantic City Centre Hotels

  • The Hotel 1898 has yet another of Barcelona’s great city centre hotel roof terraces, in this instance with a pool, day beds, an informal tapas style restaurant and cocktail bar, and panoramic city views from multiple angles, as the terrace curves around the outside of the building. What’s extra special about the Hotel 1898’s roof terrace as that it’s relatively unknown, so it’s much easier to get a seat here compared to other rooftop bars and restaurants. The building itself began life in the 19th century as a rather grand, colonial build owned by the Philippines Tobacco Company, and it’s got large rooms and public spaces with lots of marble and wood panelling. The old warehouse houses an indoor pool and spa. There are 169 rooms and suites, with solid, but simple furnishings.
  • At the Hotel Neri the original elegance of this 17th century palace meets the comfort of the 21st century, and the results are charming and quite sensuous. The sort of opulent fabrics that belong in a palace have been used to great effect: crushed velvets, vibrant silks and silver and gold leaf, but they’re teamed with more rustic furniture. And powers showers and plasma screen TVs. The tapas restaurant is foodie and fashionable and there’s a bar with a terrace, and a library. And you’re in the heart of the historic, romantic Gothic Quarter.

Hotel Bagues

  • The Hotel Bagués is one for lovers of good design. It’s immaculately decorated to reflect the Gothic features of the area and the building’s original features, but also stylishly minimal, with carefully chosen woods, like Madagascan ebony and walnut, in simple shapes. Each of the 31 rooms has an exclusive piece of the Masrieria Art Collection too. Atop it all there’s a roof terrace with a small lap pool and a bar, and downstairs there’s a restaurant.

For Foodies

Alma Barcelona

  • Just off the Passeig de Gràcia, close to Gaudi’s Pedrera, the Alma Barcelona is cool, modern and five star, and could conceivably be at home in several of our categories. But its restaurant, the Jardin del Alma, which serves seasonal Catalan cuisine by renowned chef, Gio Esteve, really elevates the hotel to somewhere very special. In addition to the restaurant there’s a garden with a cocktail bar, and a roof terrace with a lounge bar. Plus the hotel spa has a Turkish bath, a steam room and a sauna. The decor is contemporary, in the view of mid-century modern, with all the technological mod. cons including finger print touch pad room entry. There are 72 rooms and suites, some with private balconies or terraces.
  • Barcelona is a town for foodies and there are a number of hotels with Michelin stars. Our pick in the centre of town is Cram; its restaurant, Angle has one star. Cram’s location, close to the Passeig de Gracia, the Plaça Cataluña, and Las Ramblas helps its popularity too. The name suggests a lack of space, but that couldn’t be further from the truth, Cram’s 67 rooms and suites are quite spacious, and quite space-age too, with smooth white surfaces and pale wood. There’s a roof terrace with a pool, a bar and great views of the city, plus an additional bar downstairs. There’s also a spa.

For Families

  • Sometimes when you’re travelling as a family the one thing you really need is some kind of 24hour complimentary snack buffet? Well, Casa Camper, Barcelona agrees with that sentiment, and that’s what they’ve got. They also have 40 functional funky rooms, offering the same sort of fashion feel as Camper shoes, of which this hotel is an offshoot. Casa Camper is also eco-aware: the water is heated by the sun, their waste is treated biodynamically, and they have a fleet of bikes available to guests. The rooms are boldly coloured and pared down, but they all have their own separate sitting room.

Midmost Hotel

  • Chic, contemporary and affordable, the Midmost Hotel has a great collection of rooms and suites, 56, to be precise, including comfortable family suites with generous balconies, terraces or private patios. The location is on the western side of central Barcelona, close to Las Ramblas and La Boqueria, and some of Barcelona’s most stylish shopping. Before your kids start asking, yes, there is a pool, it’s on the roof terrace, and has stunning city views. There’s also a bar up there, and a restaurant downstairs.
  • The Hotel Jazz is your classic city break hotel. In a great location, just off the Passeig de Gràcia, this 108 room hotel has crisp, functional decor in monochrome colours with just the right amount of wood, granite and slate. The facilities are very functional too: a pool on the roof terrace, with a bar, a breakfast rooms downstairs, and a business centre. There are some great family rooms and suites, with plenty of un-fussy space.

Hotel Regina

  • The Hotel Regina is another classic city break hotel. Behind an historic facade, its 99 rooms and suites are all clean lines and neat neutral wood furniture. They’re so keen to let you know that they’re welcoming to families that they have even included a photo showing that you’ll still have space to live in their family suites even after your kids have got some of their toys out! There’s no restaurant, but there is a cocktail bar in the lobby and a breakfast room. Which will push you to eat out and have more of a city break experience!

Great Hotels close to Las Ramblas

Anakena House

  • Small and classically decorated in the Catalan modernist style, with some fantastic Catalan floor tiling, Anakena House makes for a perfect break from the bustle of sight-seeing Barcelona. It occupies an elegant pinkish building right on Golden Square, not far from the Picasso Museum, and behind this facade are just seven rooms, all with balconies, and a breakfast room.
  • If you’re looking for a place to make yourself at home in the centre of Barcelona consider staying in one of Stay U-nique Rambla Catalunya’s four apartments, just five minutes stroll from Las Ramblas. Within the Example neighbourhood, these four apartments vary in size, but all have simple decor, air conditioning, a full kitchen and washing machine, and all the mod. cons.. Some have terraces or balconies overlooking the city too. Perfect for families too.

The Most Luxurious City Centre Hotels in Barcelona

  • For the sort of luxury that’s immediately recognisable by its opulence, you want to book El Palace. Formerly Barcelona’s Ritz, this hotel has recently had a makeover that’s restored its elegant 1920s glamour. But it’s not pretentious with it, these chandeliers, oil paintings and beautiful fabrics come with friendly service. And neutral tones and fresh flowers in all 125 of the rooms, from the more basic ones to those suites with their incredible original baths. The restaurant, Caelis, has a Michelin star, and the buffet breakfast spills out into the garden when the weather is fine.

Hotel Pulitzer

  • As far as decor goes, the Hotel Pulitzer is at the other end of the luxury scale. Its 89 rooms are decorated in confident, slightly angular monochrome with scaled-up contemporary art and dark wood floors. The hotel’s public spaces are softer, featuring a paler wood floor and lots and lots of natural light. The restaurant is especially beautiful, with its plethora of plants and glass ceiling, and the lobby bar is big and welcoming. There’s also a roof terrace with a bar that looks even more fun, and a gym.

For great value

H10 Metropolitan

  • The designers of the 85 room H10 Metropolitan have done a gorgeous job renovating this historic industrial building with its crisp angles and huge windows. The interiors are by Lázaro Rosa-Violán , who has stuck with the 19th century industrial theme, with some great modern, mid-century style furniture, and lots of useable public space. There are 85 rooms, a pool and lively restaurant, plus a roof terrace with a plunge pool and solarium, and views of Plaça Catalunya and Tibidabo. And you’re about three minutes from Las Ramblas.
  • Room Mate Pau is Barcelona’s local Room Mate Hotel, and it’s a great, contemporary choice if your budget is limited. Pau has 66 rooms and suites in all shapes and sizes, some with their own private terraces and hot tubs. The decor is bright and fun, with lots of white and wood. There’s no restaurant, but they do offer breakfast.

Hostel Grau

  • For something smaller try Praktik Rambla, an affordable boutique-style hotel with 43 simply decorated monochrome rooms that really let the original architectural features show through. The location, on the edge of Eixample, close to the Passig de Gràcia, is very convenient, and there are great facilities considering the hotel’s size, including a library, sunlit terrace, a gym and a restaurant.
  • Just a short stroll from Las Ramblas, the Hostal Grau is a 19 room hotel with stylish, white, minimal interiors and a few rustic details. Aside from being affordable, this hotel has an extremely conscientious approach to the environment, a great cocktail bar, great service and a bicycle scheme if you want to travel a bit further afield.
  • Right in the thick and thin cobbled alleyways of the historic Gothic Quarter, the Hotel Barcelona Catedral is just minutes from the Plaza de Catalunya and the cathedral. With 80 simple chic rooms and great in-house facilities this is a popular business hotel, but it has lots to offer city breakers too, like cooking classes with the hotel’s chefs, or wine-tastings with the sommelier. They also have a fleet of complimentary bikes and a fitness centre. And a roof terrace with a gorgeous pool-with-a-view.
