Under the cover of darkness at 4:30 a.m., the hotel transports guests by private car or tuk-tuk to a temple complex that encompasses more than 400 square kilometres and relics of the Khmer Empire that date back as far as the 9th century. Flashlight in hand, the expert guide escorts guests through the darkened temple compound via a secret shortcut, bypassing the scores of people already queuing to see Angkor Wat as the sun’s first rays emerge. After sunrise, guests repair to one of the more secluded temples close to Angkor Wat where a personal butler is waiting to serve freshly squeezed juice, coffee or tea, an array of tropical fruits and freshly baked pastries.
