The Angel Inn is not only in a commanding position in the centre of the smart market town of Corbridge but it's also a central hub of the community. Locals regularly pop in for morning coffee and a scone, or a drink after work while booking is usually essential for Sunday lunch. Behind the white-washed, 18th-century exterior is a stylish but relaxed interior with a contemporary-rustic bar - the buzzy heart of the pub and where many people eat - a quieter wood-panelled lounge, and a beamed dining-room at the rear. Bedrooms are on the small side but crisply done in country-chic style with tartan headboards, solid oak furniture, bright feature wallpapers and moody Northumberland photographs. Some have no views and are priced accordingly but all have good-size bathrooms. And if you forget your walking boots, they'll lend you a pair, just one of the thoughtful features offered to guests. After a day's walking on Hadrian's Wall, come back to a hearty supper that's several notches above pub food - practically everything made from scratch, including the wonderfully old-fashioned puddings.

"It’s a handsome, stone-built house with a domestic feel, now prettily painted in cream and pale blue to match the inn opposite. Here the light-filled rooms are larger, calmer and brighter than those in the inn, with river views."
