“An enchanting farmhouse, comprising 38 self-contained cottages surrounded by pygmy goats and pigs, horses, donkeys and chickens, cats and dogs, offering urban families an escape into a rural paradise.”

Hotel review

The result of a dream by owner lawyer Pedro Franca Pinto to build a legacy for the future and his children, Craveiral comprises 38 self-contained cottages, grouped together in clusters, set within the wide, unspoilt landscape of the Alentejo.

The cottages range in size from studios to two bed rooms and farm lofts and all come with a kitchen or kitchenette, a desk, seating area and an outside terrace. They are reached by a wooden walkway which cuts through the flower-filled scrub and dunes and interiors pay homage to Portuguese designs, drawing on companies such as DAM and WeWood for their furniture. There is one large swimming pool, perfectly positioned to catch the sunset, a smaller pool to be shared by the cottage cluster which caters to adults only and a third, indoor, pool (heated) within the wellbeing area. A gym sauna, steam room and hot tub are also found here.

Dining is defined by Craveiral’s concept of luxury through simplicity and its emphasis on nature. The farm to table ethos means dishes range from free-range eggs from the farmhouse’s hens, scrambled with chard from the garden to octopus with home-grown sweet potato purée or home-made pizzas, with the crispiest, thinnest of bases and tomatoes and olives from the garden on top. The restaurant also showcases the region’s specialities, one of the highlights of visiting the Alentejo, with spicy sausage and hams from the local butcher, goat’s cheese and fresh white cheese from the cheesemonger and wine from the surrounding vineyards, such as Vicentino.

The animals play an important part in the daily life of Craveiral, as does the garden. Children are encouraged to ride the horses, collect eggs from the hens, visit the donkeys and goats and do gardening workshops. Adults have the possibility of Lu Jong yoga classes and ayurvedic massages on request.
