A brilliant first or final Sri Lankan holiday stop, Horathapola Estate brims with charm. This imposing estate house features spacious guest rooms with private balconies overlooking verdant gardens. Nab a room in the main house for superb period furnishings, teak floors and huge bathrooms, hide away in the two-bedroom lodge as a family, or book the more contemporary pool suite. Expect delicious Sri Lankan feasts — Western options are also available — crafted from the estate’s own produce. The team’s attention to detail is excellent. Spend your days lazing about in the saltwater pool, embarking on a complimentary bullock cart ride across the estate, or touring coconut oil and coir rope factories with a knowledgeable guide. Enjoy evenings on the terrace as tropical birds flit overhead. A relaxed, romantic spot, which also suits groups of friends or outdoorsy families.
