Hotel Review

Well they do say "location, location, location" and you won't get much better in Dubrovnik than this - unless of course you actually want to be in the Old Town. At the Excelsior you get a waterfront spot (with private beach and swimming area) with unencumbered views to the old port and city beyond (and you're only a 10 minute stroll away). All their terraces are positioned to make the most of this and sundowners are a treat to behold. Rooms are scattered between two buildings, the original 1913 royal villa and the modern extension, and they're all you'd expect from a luxury five star property - big comfortable beds, marble bathrooms with complimentary Occidentale smellies, and private terraces/balconies (all except the most basic rooms) for soaking up the views. The style is contemporary classic with wooden floors and furniture and a creamy palette throughout. The property also boasts an extensive spa (huge indoor pool, gym and wide range of Decleor treatments) and several dining options including a beach restaurant with those mesmerising views over the twinkling lights of Dubrovnik's Old city. Don't miss a visit to the gallery opposite the piano bar where you'll find a rogues' gallery of all the famous faces (including the Queen and Elizabeth Taylor) who have graced the Excelsior with their presence over the years. For those who want to combine a beach and city break you certainly can't beat it.

Hotel Excelsior, Dubrovnik, Croatia

'The main pulls here are the fantastic sea views and proximity to Dubrovnik's medieval-walled Old Town, clearly visible across the water. While the modern wing is a little garish — think lots of mirrored glass — you shouldn't be put off by the exterior. This is a big five-star hotel with facilities aplenty.'
