Nimmu House

Transport yourself back into the 17th century with a stay at Nimmu House. Standing tall amidst the rest of Nimmu village’s dwellings this heritage house is surrounded by an unassuming mud brick wall, typical of this area, so guests have total privacy. Five tents (with plans for more) are dotted around its orchard garden, amidst an abundance of apple and apricot trees – you can pluck the fruits right from them: quite the biblical scene. Each has its own private terrace and hammock for two, perfect for lazy afternoons with a good book – when you’re all monasteried out. Inside there is a separate lounging area, which can be used for small children to sleep, making it ideal for young families. Interiors are sympathetic to their local environment and include many locally sourced items. From the willow floorboards to the slate feature wall, right down to the wicker baskets in the bathroom and wool spun rugs. Rooms located in the main house are utterly charming however not to everyone’s taste – think 17th century ceiling heights. Those over 6ft: beware. The décor however more than makes up for the lack of headspace with original floorboards, exposed beams and those decorative Ladakhi balcony windows. The food is something that sets Nimmu House apart from the rest, which is a blessing as there is nowhere else to eat in the area! It’s French owner would stand for nothing less. Daily changing menus are largely sourced from the property’s organic vegetable garden and are farm fresh and utterly delicious. From creamy spinach soup to spicy Thai curries or apple and apricot tarts, straight from the garden: you well eat well at Nimmu House. In all it is a wonderful homogenization of traditional Ladakhi and an honest French fair – highly recommended.
