“This riverfront inn in the heart of Henley has been transformed into an elegant retreat by top hotelier Grace Leo. The decor balances heritage charm with plush, contemporary touches — think rich fabrics, vintage artwork, & bespoke furniture. With stylish dining, a cosy bar, & scenic terrace views”

Hotel review

The Red Lion’s roots reach back to the mid 15th century and its guests included King Charles I. When international hotelier Grace Leo took on the property, she created reception rooms that easily earned the enticing title of ‘Relais’ and exude, like her, a slightly mysterious, east-meets-west charm and sophistication. In the Clipper restaurant, burnt orange banquettes, beautiful ceramics and a mix of English and oriental art make an airy place to linger.

Scenes from Henley Regatta and staff sporting specially designed rowing blazers underline the hotel’s prime position on the fabled stretch of river for rowing and racing outside. The former dining room has transformed into an elegant Palm Court, with Chinoiserie touches such as arched mirrors, ceiling fans, fringed armchairs, oriental ornaments, tall palms in huge pots and a carpet made of a mosaic of Persian and Chinese rugs.

Only the warren of corridors leading to sophisticated bedrooms remind one that this is not an oriental retreat but a creaky old English inn
