“Large and handsome, food-focused Georgian coaching inn with a coolly retro makeover that’s kept the traditional feel but with a modern, relaxed vibe. Food is what makes this place tick; punchy, smart and comfortably filling.”

Hotel review

This former Georgian coaching inn in the centre of Malton – Yorkshire’s self-named foodie capital – has been winningly updated into a modern version of a traditional inn without losing its character. There are comfy sofas, mis-matched tables and chairs, well-scrubbed floorboards and a profusion of ferns and pot-plants. Smudgy-green walls are crammed with art while pops of bright colours give a playful vibe.

Food is at the heart of this place – the inn is owned by the Fitzwilliam Estate whose leading light, Philip Naylor-Leyland, is a passionate advocate of Malton’s foodie credentials. Expect robust dishes, with locally sourced ingredients, and big portions. And always leave room for pudding. You’ll certainly sleep well in one of the bedrooms that are spread over its warren of floors and staircases. Their style is comfortably simple, with a mix of bold colours, vintage furniture and big bathrooms, although the modish dark walls in some rooms can make them dark. Ask for a rear room for views to the River Derwent or a superior room for a proper old fashioned bath. After a day’s exploring, return for a relaxed evening with good grub and great conversation guaranteed.

THE TALBOT, MALTON

Coaching inns have provided succour, seduction and salvation from the road for travellers for the past 300 years at least. The Talbot in Malton is a classic: on a bluff above the meandering Derwent, overlooking water meadows, its further views are the wooded ridges of Yorkshire.
